Village Homes and Rural Properties
Cookstown, a census-designated place of about 900 people, is the township’s main village, and the General Edward Settle Godfrey House there is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond the village, homes are spread across farmland and woods, and part of the township lies in the Pinelands.
Older village homes may have wood siding and trim that has been painted and repaired many times, sometimes covered by later siding. Rural homes may face open fields on one side and woods on another. Each situation affects how siding wears and how it should be repaired. Housing on the base itself is managed separately and falls outside the work we do; our focus is on privately owned homes in the township.
A Quick Self-Inspection
Twice a year, and after any big storm, walk around your house and check:
- Every wall, top to bottom. Look for missing, cracked, or loose pieces, including gables and upper walls (use binoculars if needed).
- Corners and trim. Are corner posts tight? Is J-channel around windows intact?
- The bottom course. Is it clear of soil, mulch, and firewood? Is there any soft or dark wood?
- Below roof edges and windows. Any streaks, stains, or peeling paint?
- Gutters and downspouts. Are they attached, clear, and draining away from the house?
- Soffit and fascia. Any sagging panels, gaps, or signs of animals?
Write down what you find and take photos. Never climb a ladder to check; call us for anything high.

Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding hangs loosely so it can move. Panels hook onto the course below and are nailed through slotted holes along the top. A damaged panel can usually be unlocked and replaced without disturbing the rest of the wall, and a loose but undamaged panel can often be reseated. When walls ripple, the courses were likely nailed too tightly and need to be re-hung.
Vinyl fades in sunlight, and colors and profiles get discontinued over time, so a new panel may not match a weathered wall exactly. We show you the closest available match and discuss options, such as moving original panels from a back wall to the front.
Fiber Cement, Wood and Cedar, and Aluminum
Fiber cement resists rot but can crack from impact or at joints. We replace damaged boards, seal joints as required, and repaint.
Wood and cedar can split, cup, or rot where water collects. We replace damaged pieces, prime and paint new wood as agreed, and correct the moisture source.
Aluminum dents easily and its finish chalks. We replace damaged sections and tell you if an older profile is hard to match.
Recognizing Siding Problems
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.
- Loose: panels lifting or rattling in wind
- Cracked: splits from stones, hail, or limbs
- Warped: waves on sunny walls
- Missing: sections torn away by wind
- Trim damage: loose corner posts, split J-channel
- Rot: soft wood near the ground or under windows
Storm and Wind Damage
Summer thunderstorms and nor’easters can push wind across open farmland and bring down limbs near the woods. Wind lifts loose siding and peels it from corners and gables. After a storm, walk all the way around the house and look from the ground. Photograph damage before cleanup and keep pieces that came off. Do not climb ladders or go onto the roof, and stay away from downed wires.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides what is covered. We can document what we find, explain the repairs needed to protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Behind Siding
The weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind siding carry water back out. Older walls may have little or no barrier. We check:
- Kick-out flashing at roof-to-wall joints
- Window and door flashing
- Gutters that overflow onto walls
- The bottom course and its clearance above the ground
- Openings for vents, lights, and pipes
Because we also repair roofs and gutters, we can fix the source. Our New Hanover Township gutter cleaning page explains how gutters protect walls.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia boards close the roof edge and carry gutters; soffit closes the overhang and vents the attic. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag, and damaged soffit gives birds, bats, and squirrels a way in. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check whether a roof or gutter problem started the damage. Our New Hanover Township roofing page covers roof work.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually makes sense when damage is limited and the rest of the siding is sound. Replacement deserves discussion when:
- Several walls are damaged or brittle
- Moisture has damaged sheathing over large areas
- Your siding can no longer be matched
- Repairs keep failing
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain the options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
On a full replacement, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints, and fasten new siding with room for expansion and contraction. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum, and review product, profile, and color options with you during the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the New Hanover Township construction office, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Seasonal Care
- Spring: do your self-inspection and rinse mildew from shaded walls.
- Summer: trim branches back and keep grills away from vinyl.
- Fall: clean gutters after leaves and needles drop, then inspect again.
- Winter: keep snow piles away from siding.
Inspect from the ground only. For upper walls, call a professional.
Planning Around a Rural Lot
We plan logistics with you before work begins: where a truck can park, where materials can be staged, and how lawns, wells, septic areas, and plantings will be protected. We collect debris as we go and walk the property at the end to pick up fasteners and offcuts.
Outbuildings Deserve a Look Too
Rural properties often include detached garages, sheds, workshops, or small barns with siding of their own. Because they get less attention than the house, loose panels and rotted trim on outbuildings can go unnoticed for years, and water that gets in can damage tools, equipment, or stored belongings. If an outbuilding has siding damage, mention it at your estimate. Repairing it alongside the house is often simpler than a separate visit, and we can match materials between buildings where possible.
Why Small Repairs Matter
One loose panel flaps in every wind until it breaks the panels around it. A cracked corner post lets water run behind the siding for months. Taking care of small problems quickly keeps repairs simple and protects the sheathing and framing behind the wall.
When to Call
- Siding is missing, cracked, or hanging
- Panels flap in the wind
- Trim or sills are soft
- Gutters are pulling away
- Stains appear below windows or roof edges
