Watchung’s name comes from Lenape words meaning “high hills,” and its roughly 2,300 homes sit on sloping, often wooded land. Homes on higher ground face more wind, wooded lots drop leaves and limbs, and larger homes have complex rooflines with many wall joints. We serve the borough from our main headquarters in East Rutherford and our regional location in Flemington.

Siding on Sloped Lots
Building on a hillside changes how a house’s walls behave:
- Tall downhill walls. On a sloped lot, the downhill side of a house can be noticeably taller than the uphill side, sometimes with a walk-out level. Taller walls catch more wind and are harder to see and reach, so damage high on them can go unnoticed.
- The uphill wall and soil. On the uphill side, soil and mulch tend to creep toward the house over time. Siding that ends up close to or below grade stays wet and invites rot and insects.
- Water running toward the house. Rain flowing downhill can collect against the uphill wall. Grading, drainage, and downspout extensions that carry water around the house protect the bottom of that wall.
- Access. Sloped driveways and yards affect where ladders, staging, and materials can go. We plan deliveries and setup to protect driveways and landscaping.
When we repair siding on a hillside home, we look at the clearance and drainage on the uphill side and the fastening on tall, exposed walls.
Wind on the Ridges
Homes on higher ground face more wind. Corners, gable ends, and tall walls facing open views take the most, and a loose panel up high can be pulled off in the next storm. On exposed walls, we check nailing on surrounding panels whenever we repair one.

Wooded Lots and Larger Homes
Wooded lots drop leaves, needles, and branches into gutters and can drop limbs onto walls during storms. Shaded walls dry slowly and can grow mildew. Larger homes with complex roofs have more valleys, dormers, and chimneys, and so more roof-to-wall joints where flashing must tuck behind siding. We trace water problems to their true source before recommending repairs.
Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding panels interlock and hang from nails driven loosely through slotted holes, so they can move with temperature. A damaged or blown-off panel is replaced by unlocking the course above, installing a new panel with correct nailing into solid backing, and relocking.
Vinyl fades and colors and profiles get discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match. We find the closest match and can move an original panel from a sheltered wall to the visible repair.
Fiber Cement, Wood and Cedar, Aluminum
Fiber cement handles wind well and resists rot, but can crack from impact. We replace damaged boards and paint to blend.
Wood and cedar siding splits, cups, and rots where moisture lingers, especially on shaded or uphill walls. We replace damaged pieces and fix the cause.
Aluminum dents and can be bent by wind or limbs. We replace damaged panels when a matching profile can be found and tell you upfront if not.
Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.
- Loose: failed fasteners, torn hems, or panels unlocked by wind.
- Cracked: impacts from limbs or debris, especially in cold weather.
- Warped or buckled: nailing that prevents movement.
- Missing: wind lifting a weak course, often on tall, exposed walls.
- Trim and corners: split J-channel, loose corner posts, rotted trim.
Cover missing siding quickly to protect the wall.
Storm Damaged Siding Repair
Wind on the ridges and limbs from wooded lots are the main storm risks. After a storm, look from the ground, photograph damage before cleanup, and keep any pieces that came off. Binoculars help with tall downhill walls.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides coverage. We can document the damage and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Intrusion
Some water always gets past siding, and the weather-resistive barrier and flashing beneath carry it out. When those layers fail, the wall stays wet. Common sources:
- Missing kick-out flashing at the many roof-to-wall joints on complex homes
- Gutters clogged with leaves and needles
- Soil and mulch built up against the uphill wall
- Windows and doors without proper flashing
- Cracked or missing panels
Signs include streaks, mildew, peeling paint, swollen trim, soft spots, and musty smells indoors, especially in lower levels on the uphill side. We also handle gutters and can fix drainage at the same time. See our Watchung gutter cleaning page.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia carries the gutters; soffit encloses the overhang. Wind can loosen soffit on exposed homes, and gutters full of wet leaves are hard on fascia. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check gutters and the roof edge for the cause.
Repair or Siding Replacement?
Repair is usually right when damage is limited and the rest of the siding is sound. Replacement is worth considering when siding repeatedly blows loose, damage spans several walls, moisture damage is widespread, or matching is not possible. We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain our recommendation.
Siding Installation
For a full siding installation, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints, and install new siding with correct fastening, room for expansion, and proper clearance above grade. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and review product, profile, and color options at the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Watchung construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Walk-Out Levels and Lower Walls
On homes with a walk-out lower level, the bottom of the downhill wall often meets a patio or lawn at grade, and the lower-level walls carry siding that sits close to the ground. Splash-back from patios, snow sitting against the wall, and water draining off the slope all test that area. Siding and trim should stop a few inches above patios and soil, doors at that level need head flashing like any other opening, and downspouts from the upper roof should not discharge onto the patio right against the wall. When we repair siding on a lower level, we look at those details along with the damaged area.
Choosing Siding for Exposed Hillside Walls
If you are replacing siding on a house with tall, exposed walls, it is worth discussing how each material handles wind. Heavier, rigid materials resist wind differently than lighter panels, and vinyl products vary in thickness and fastening design. Whatever material you choose, correct fastening into solid backing is what keeps it on the wall.
Seasonal Siding Care
- Spring: check tall walls with binoculars and pull mulch back from the uphill wall.
- Summer: trim branches back from the house.
- Fall: clean gutters after leaves and needles drop.
- Winter: keep snow away from walls, especially where it drifts against the uphill side.
Inspect from the ground, and call a professional for anything high.
Local Considerations in Watchung

Hilly, wooded lots, wind on higher ground, and larger homes are the main factors for siding here.
