A Compact River Town
Bordentown was incorporated as a borough in 1825 and became a city in 1867, and it packs about 2,000 housing units onto a compact footprint, with Bordentown Township wrapping around it on three sides. Homes in an older, compact town tend to have a long history of updates: siding replaced or covered over, windows changed, porches enclosed, additions built. Each of those changes leaves a seam in the exterior where water can get in if the trim and flashing were not done carefully.
Close spacing between houses also matters during repairs. Side walls can be hard to see and harder to reach, so we plan ladder placement and debris control carefully and keep neighbors’ property protected.

How Gutters and Siding Work Together
Gutters and siding are two halves of the same system. The gutter catches water coming off the roof; the siding and flashing shed whatever reaches the wall. When the gutter fails, the wall takes the hit.
An overflowing gutter dumps water down the face of the siding, often in the same spot every storm. Over time, that soaks the wall, stains siding, peels paint on trim, and rots fascia boards. A downspout that discharges right at the foundation splashes water and dirt onto the bottom course. A gutter that pulls away from the house lets water run behind it and down the fascia. And where a lower roof meets a wall, a missing kick-out flashing sends water behind the siding instead of into the gutter.
Because we also clean, repair, and replace gutters, we can fix both halves at once. See our Bordentown gutter cleaning page for more on the gutter side.
Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding hangs loosely so it can move with temperature. Each panel hooks onto the panel below and is nailed through slotted holes along the top. A cracked or blown-loose panel can usually be unlocked and replaced without removing the rest of the wall. When a wall shows waves or bulges, the panels were usually nailed too tightly or jammed against trim, and re-hanging the affected courses lets them move again.
Vinyl fades in sunlight, and older colors and profiles are sometimes discontinued, so a replacement panel may not match a weathered wall exactly. We show you the closest available match first and discuss options, such as moving original panels from a less visible wall to the front of the house.
Wood and Cedar Siding
Older homes in a historic town may have wood clapboard or cedar shingles, either exposed or under later siding. Wood can be repaired one piece at a time. Splits, cupping, and rot usually start where water lingers, so along with replacing damaged boards, we look at gutters, flashing, and ground clearance. New wood should be primed on all sides and painted to blend, and we explain what finish work is included.
Fiber Cement and Aluminum
Fiber cement boards resist rot but can crack from impact or at poorly fastened joints. We replace damaged boards, seal joints as required, and repaint.
Aluminum siding dents easily and its finish chalks with age. We replace damaged sections and are upfront when an older profile cannot be closely matched.
Signs of Siding Damage
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.
- Panels that rattle, lift, or sit out of line
- Cracks or holes from impact
- Waves or bulges on sunny walls
- Missing pieces after wind
- Corner posts and J-channel pulling away
- Stains or peeling paint below gutters, windows, and roof edges
Storm and Wind Damage
Strong winds from summer thunderstorms and nor’easters can lift loose siding and peel it off corners and gables, and falling branches crack panels and dent trim. After a storm, check your walls from the ground. Photograph damage before cleanup and keep pieces that blew off. Do not climb ladders or go onto the roof.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides what is covered. We can document what we find, explain the repairs needed to protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Behind the Siding
Siding is not watertight. A weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it send water back out. On older homes, that barrier may be missing or deteriorated, which makes the siding and flashing work harder. We check:
- Kick-out flashing at roof-to-wall joints
- Window and door flashing
- Seams where additions or enclosed porches meet the original house
- The bottom course and its clearance above the ground
- Openings for vents, lights, faucets, and utilities
Watch for stains, peeling trim paint, soft spots, and swelling around windows.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia boards close the roof edge and carry gutters; soffit closes the overhang and vents the attic. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag, and damaged soffit gives birds, squirrels, and insects a way in. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check whether a gutter or roof edge caused the damage. Our Bordentown roofing page covers roof repairs.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually makes sense when damage is limited and the rest of the siding is sound. Replacement is worth discussing when:
- Several walls are damaged or the siding is brittle
- Moisture has damaged the sheathing over large areas
- Your color or profile is no longer available
- Repairs keep failing
- You are planning other exterior work
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain your options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
On a full replacement, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints, and fasten new siding with room for expansion and contraction. If older siding is found underneath, we discuss whether to remove it so the wall can be checked and properly wrapped. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum, and review product, profile, and color options with you during the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Bordentown construction office, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Enclosed Porches and Additions
In an older town, many houses have been expanded. Enclosed porches, rear additions, and dormers each bring their own small walls, corners, and roof-to-wall joints. These areas often get less attention than the main walls, yet they are where water tends to sneak in. A porch enclosure may have siding that sits too close to the porch floor or roof. An addition may have been sided at a different time with a different product. A dormer may have short side walls that are hard to see from the ground and lack proper step or kick-out flashing.
When we look at a house, we check these smaller areas along with the main walls, and we explain anything that needs attention so you can decide whether to address it now or later.
Seasonal Siding Care
- Spring: walk the house for winter damage and check that gutters survived the season.
- Summer: keep grills away from vinyl and watch for waves on sunny walls.
- Fall: clean gutters after leaves drop and make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation.
- Winter: keep snow piles and shovels away from siding.
Inspect from the ground only. For upper walls, call a professional.
Signs It Is Time to Call
- Siding is missing, cracked, or hanging
- Panels flap in the wind
- A wall looks wavy
- Stains run down from gutters or windows
- Fascia is soft or gutters are pulling away
