Dumont is a settled residential borough of about 17,900 people on just under two square miles. It was incorporated as the Borough of Schraalenburgh and renamed in 1898 for its first mayor, Dumont Clarke. With very low vacancy rates, most homes here are occupied and maintained year after year. Because so much siding damage really starts with the flashing behind it, this page includes a homeowner’s guide to wall flashing.

A Guide to the Flashing Behind Your Siding
Siding sheds most rain, but not all of it. Flashing is the metal or membrane that directs water out of the wall at every joint and opening. When siding stains, swells, or rots in one spot, a flashing problem is often the reason.
Window and door head flashing
Above every window and door, a piece of flashing or a drip cap should run across the top of the trim and tuck up behind the wall wrap, so water running down the wall is kicked out over the opening instead of behind the trim. When it is missing, water runs behind the window casing and into the wall. Stains or rot at the top corners of window trim are a common sign.
Side and sill flashing
The sides and bottom of a window opening need flashing tape or a sill pan lapped correctly with the wall wrap. Water that gets past the window itself, which happens on almost every window eventually, should be directed out at the sill, not into the framing below. Soft wood or stains below a window corner often trace back here.
Step flashing at roof-to-wall joints
Where a sloped roof meets a wall, such as at a dormer or a two-story section, L-shaped pieces of step flashing are woven in with the shingles, and the siding covers the upper leg. The siding needs a gap above the shingles so its bottom edge does not sit in water. When siding is installed tight to the roof or step flashing is missing, the siding and the wall behind it rot from the bottom.
Kick-out flashing
At the bottom of a roof-to-wall joint, where the roof edge ends against a wall, a kick-out flashing turns water into the gutter. Without it, all the water running down that joint goes behind the siding. This is one of the most common causes of hidden wall rot, and the damage often shows up as stains or soft siding just below the roof edge.
Horizontal joints and transitions
Where siding meets a different material, such as a band of trim, a change from one siding type to another, or masonry, a Z-flashing or drip edge should shed water out over the joint below. Without it, water collects on the horizontal trim and runs behind the siding.
Penetrations
Light fixtures, outlets, hose bibs, dryer vents, and utility lines all pass through the wall. Each one should have a mounting block or flashing that sheds water around it. Caulk alone eventually dries and cracks.

Vinyl Siding Repair
Damaged vinyl panels can usually be replaced individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, remove the nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. Loose panels are re-hung, and buckled sections are refastened. Because vinyl comes off easily, it is also simple to look behind a damaged area at the flashing and wrap.
Color matching has limits. Vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, like moving original panels from a hidden wall.
Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum
- Wood and cedar: we replace split or rotted pieces, prime all sides, paint, and correct the flashing that let water in.
- Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, butt joints flashed, and new boards painted.
- Aluminum: dented and loose sections are replaced where profiles can be matched.
Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding
General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.
- Loose siding: panels that rattle, bow, or have come unlocked.
- Cracked siding: impact, age, or cold brittleness.
- Warped siding: ripples from tight nailing or heat.
- Missing siding: pieces torn off by wind.
- Damaged trim: split corners, bent J-channel, rotted sills.
Storm Damaged Siding Repair
Wind-driven rain is the ultimate flashing test. Leaks that show up only in storms from one direction often point to flashing on that side of the house. After a storm, walk around your home and look from the ground for missing, cracked, or hanging siding, and check inside for new stains near windows. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders to inspect high walls.
If you file an insurance claim, your insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Signs of Moisture Behind Siding
Watch for stains at the corners of window trim, peeling paint on sills, swelling, soft spots, musty smells near an outside wall, and stains below roof edges where they meet a wall. Overflowing gutters add water to all of these. Because we also handle roofing and gutters, we check what is above a damaged wall. Our Dumont gutter cleaning page explains more.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, and fascia carries the gutters. A missing drip edge at the roof lets water run behind the gutter and rot the fascia, which then sags and spills onto the siding. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and correct the roof-edge details that caused the damage.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually works when damage is limited to a few pieces or one area. Replacement is worth discussing when:
- Flashing is missing or failed at many openings
- Siding is brittle and cracks or loosens repeatedly
- Moisture damage behind the siding is widespread
- Matching pieces are unavailable
- Window replacement or other exterior work is planned
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Dumont, we look at the siding and the wall behind it and explain your options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
A full siding replacement is the natural time to get every flashing detail right. We remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every window, door, penetration, and roof-to-wall joint, and fasten new siding with room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options with you at the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Dumont construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Settled Homes, Long-Term Care
In a borough where most homes are occupied and maintained year after year, siding care tends to be a long game. Small habits make a difference over time: keeping gutters flowing, re-caulking trim joints when they open, repainting wood before it goes bare, trimming shrubs back so walls can dry, and fixing a loose panel before the next storm finds it. When something needs more than routine care, having flashing corrected at the same time as the siding repair means you are not paying to fix the same spot twice.
Seasonal Siding Care
- Spring: look at window trim corners and sills for new stains or soft spots.
- Summer: check caulk at penetrations and trim joints.
- Fall: clean gutters so they do not overflow onto walls.
- Winter: keep snow piles away from siding and sills.
Check from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.
Signs to Call a Siding Contractor
- Stains or rot at window trim corners
- Soft sills or swollen trim below windows
- Stains below a roof edge where it meets a wall
- Cracked, missing, or hanging siding
- Leaks only during wind-driven rain
- Gutters pulling away from the fascia
