Garfield is a city of about 32,700 people packed into just over two square miles along the Passaic River, with more than 15,000 residents per square mile. Houses sit close together and exteriors take a beating. On homes like these, siding rarely fails on its own; it fails because of what is happening at the roof edge, the gutters, or the flashing above it. That connection is what this page is about.

Follow the Water From Roof to Ground
The easiest way to understand siding damage is to follow a raindrop down the outside of a house.
At the roof edge
Water leaves the roof at the eaves, and the drip edge directs it into the gutter. If the drip edge is missing or the gutter is clogged or pitched wrong, water runs behind the gutter, soaks the fascia, and spills down the top of the wall.
Into the gutters and fascia
Gutters hang from the fascia board. Once fascia rots, the gutter loosens and sags, spilling more water down the siding, which rots the fascia further. A siding repair under a sagging gutter will not last until that cycle is broken.
Past the soffit
The soffit closes the underside of the overhang and often holds attic intake vents. Damaged soffit lets animals and moisture in. Water stains on the soffit are often the first sign of a gutter or roof-edge problem.
Where roofs meet walls
Where a roof meets a wall, such as at a dormer, a second story above a porch, or an addition, step flashing is layered with the shingles and covered by the siding. Without a kick-out flashing at the bottom of that joint, water runs down inside the wall instead of into the gutter. That can rot sheathing and framing with no sign on the ceiling inside, only stains or soft spots on the siding below.
Down the face of the wall
Siding is the wall’s rain shield. Cracked, loose, or missing panels let water straight in. Behind the siding, the weather-resistive barrier and flashing at windows and doors carry incidental water back out.
At the ground
Downspouts that empty against the house splash the lowest courses and soak the base of the wall. On tight Garfield lots, a downspout can just as easily send water against the neighbor’s wall.
Because we work on roofs, gutters, chimneys, and siding, we look at every one of those steps when we repair a wall.

Vinyl Siding Repair
Damaged vinyl panels can usually be swapped individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, pull its nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. Loose panels are re-hung, and buckled sections nailed too tight can be refastened.
Know that vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued. A new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, such as moving original panels from a hidden side wall to the front.
Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum Siding
- Wood and cedar: we replace split or rotted clapboards and shingles, prime and paint them, and find the water source.
- Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, joints flashed and sealed, and new boards painted.
- Aluminum: dented and loose pieces are replaced where matching profiles can be found.
Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding
General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.
- Loose siding: panels that rattle, bow, or have come unlocked.
- Cracked siding: impact, age, or cold brittleness.
- Warped or buckled siding: ripples from tight nailing or heat.
- Missing siding: sections torn off by wind.
- Damaged trim: split corners, bent J-channel, trim pulling away.
Close Quarters
With houses close together, side walls in Garfield are hard to see and hard to reach. They also take splash and overflow from roofs on both sides of a narrow gap, and they dry slowly with little sun. When we work in a tight side yard, we plan ladder placement, protect the neighboring house and property, and keep debris contained. If you have not looked closely at your side walls in a while, it is worth walking them from the ground.
Multi-Family and Rental Homes
Many Garfield properties are multi-family houses or rentals. A missing panel or failed flashing can let water into a tenant’s unit before anyone reports it. We can provide photos and a written scope for your records, plan work around entrances and tenants, and separate urgent repairs from items that can wait.
Storm Damaged Siding Repair
Strong storms can strip loose siding and send branches and debris into walls. Homes along the Passaic River corridor may take stronger gusts. After a storm, walk around your home and look from the ground for missing, cracked, or hanging pieces. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders to check high walls.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Signs of Moisture Behind Siding
Watch for stains or streaks below gutters, roof edges, and windows; peeling paint on trim; swelling around windows; soft spots; and musty smells inside along an exterior wall. Each of these suggests water is getting behind the siding faster than it can drain. Our gutter cleaning in Garfield page explains how clean, well-pitched gutters protect the siding below.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually makes sense when damage is limited to a few pieces or one wall. Siding replacement is worth discussing when:
- Several walls are damaged
- Siding is brittle and cracks or loosens repeatedly
- There is widespread moisture damage behind the siding
- Matching material is unavailable
- You are also replacing the roof, gutters, or fascia
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Garfield, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain which approach makes sense.
Siding Installation and Replacement
When new siding is the right call, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints including kick-outs, and fasten new siding with room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options with you. Doing soffit, fascia, and gutters at the same time lets the whole exterior work as one system.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Garfield construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Soffit and Fascia Repair
Because so many Garfield siding problems start at the roof edge, soffit and fascia repair is often part of the job. We replace rotted fascia boards before rehanging or replacing gutters, so the gutters have solid backing. We replace damaged soffit panels and make sure soffit vents are open so the attic can breathe. Where wood trim has rotted, we replace it and look at whether wrapping or a different material makes sense for that spot. Fixing these pieces together with the siding keeps one weak link from undoing the rest of the repair.
Seasonal Siding Care
- Spring: walk every wall, including side yards, for winter damage.
- Summer: look for ripples on sunny walls and keep grills away from vinyl.
- Fall: clean gutters and redirect downspouts away from the house and the neighbor’s.
- Winter: keep snow piles off the siding.
Inspect from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.
Signs to Call
- Cracked, missing, or hanging siding
- Siding that moves in the wind
- Stains below gutters or roof-to-wall joints
- Sagging gutters or rotted fascia
- Soft trim at the base of walls
- Water stains on soffits

Usually the gutter is clogged, sagging, or missing a drip edge, so water runs down the wall. We look at the gutter and fascia along with the siding.
What is kick-out flashing?
