Hawthorne is a borough of about 19,600 residents on just over three square miles, created in 1898 from part of the old Manchester Township and named for the novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. With very low homeowner vacancy, many residents stay for years and improve their homes along the way, often starting with new windows. Because windows and siding are so closely tied together, this page explains how they connect and what can go wrong.

Windows and Siding: How They Fit Together

The flashing sequence

A window opening is a hole in the weather-resistive barrier. To keep water out, the sill gets flashed first, then the sides, then the head, each lapped so water runs outward and down. The window’s mounting flange, the flashing tape, and the wall wrap all lap together like shingles. Siding and trim go on last. When any layer is out of order, water that gets past the window, as it eventually does on almost every window, is directed into the wall instead of out.

J-channel and trim

On vinyl-sided homes, J-channel or window trim surrounds each opening to hide the cut ends of the siding. The J-channel at the top should lap over the side pieces and be notched so water drains out, not into, the channel. Bent, split, or poorly lapped J-channel is a common source of water behind siding around windows.

Drip caps and head flashing

Above windows and doors, a drip cap or head flashing should tuck up behind the wall wrap and kick water out past the trim. Older homes, and some newer ones, are missing this piece. Rot at the top corners of window trim or stains below a window are typical signs.

Replacing Windows in a Sided House

When windows are replaced, there are two common approaches:

  • Insert replacement: a new window fits inside the old frame, leaving the exterior trim and siding in place. It disturbs the siding least, but it relies on the old frame and flashing being sound.
  • Full-frame replacement: the old window, frame, and surrounding trim come out, and often some siding around the opening is removed. This allows new flashing to be installed and lapped correctly with the wall wrap, but the siding has to be reinstalled or replaced around each opening.

Either way, it pays to look at the siding and trim around each window when windows are replaced. If you are planning new windows, we can handle the siding, trim, and flashing around the openings so they tie in properly, and we can coordinate with your window installer.

Vinyl Siding Repair

Damaged vinyl panels can usually be replaced individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, remove the nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. Panels around windows are cut to leave room for movement inside the J-channel.

Matching has honest limits. Vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, like moving original panels from a hidden wall.

Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum

  • Wood and cedar: we replace split or rotted pieces, prime all sides, and paint to blend. Window sills and casings are often the first wood to rot.
  • Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, joints flashed, and new boards painted.
  • Aluminum: dented or loose sections and trim coil are replaced where profiles can be matched.

Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding

General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.

  • Loose siding: panels that rattle, bow, or have come unlocked.
  • Cracked siding: impact, age, or cold brittleness.
  • Warped siding: ripples from tight nailing, or panels jammed tight against window trim.
  • Missing siding: pieces torn off by wind.
  • Damaged trim: rotted sills and casings, bent J-channel.

Storm Damaged Siding Repair

Wind-driven rain tests window flashing more than any other weather. After a storm, walk around your house and look from the ground for missing, cracked, or hanging pieces, and check inside for new stains near windows. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders to inspect high walls.

If you file an insurance claim, your insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.

Winter and Spring

Snow, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles do much of their damage out of sight. In spring, look for siding cracked by shovels or ice at the base of walls, gutters and fascia bent by ice, and new stains under windows or eaves. Small winter damage is usually a simple fix when caught before summer storms.

Moisture Behind Siding

Siding is a rain screen. A weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it carry incidental water out. Common sources of trouble:

  • Windows and doors without proper head, side, and sill flashing
  • Poorly lapped J-channel
  • Missing kick-out flashing
  • Overflowing gutters
  • Cracked or missing panels

Signs include stains below windows, peeling paint on sills, swelling, soft spots, and musty smells near an outside wall. Because we also handle roofing and gutters, we look at what is above a damaged wall. Our Hawthorne gutter cleaning page explains more.

Soffit, Fascia, and Trim

Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, and fascia carries the gutters. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag and overflow onto the siding and windows below. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check the cause.

Repair or Replace?

Repair usually works when damage is limited to a few pieces or one wall. Replacement is worth discussing when:

  • Several walls are damaged
  • Flashing is missing at many windows
  • Siding is brittle and cracks or loosens repeatedly
  • Matching pieces are unavailable
  • You are replacing windows throughout the house

We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Hawthorne, we look at the siding and the wall behind it and explain your options.

Siding Installation and Replacement

For a full re-side, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every window, door, and roof-to-wall joint in the correct sequence, and fasten new siding with room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options with you at the estimate.

Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Hawthorne construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.

Doors Need the Same Care

Entry doors, sliding doors, and doors to decks and patios face even more water than windows because they sit lower on the wall and often have no overhang. A door sill should sit on a sloped sill pan that directs water outward, with side flashing lapped over it and head flashing above. When those pieces are missing, water that gets past the door threshold soaks the subfloor and the siding and trim beside and below the door. Soft trim at the bottom corners of a door, swollen siding next to it, or a spongy floor just inside are the usual signs. We repair the siding and trim and correct the flashing so the problem does not return.

Seasonal Siding Care

  • Spring: check window trim and sills for winter damage.
  • Summer: look at caulk joints around windows and doors.
  • Fall: clean gutters so they do not overflow onto windows.
  • Winter: watch for frost or water on interior window sills.

Check from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.

Signs to Call a Siding Contractor

  1. Rot at the top corners of window trim
  2. Stains below windows inside or out
  3. Bent or split J-channel
  4. Cracked, missing, or hanging siding
  5. Soft sills
  6. Gutters overflowing above windows
