Several Generations of Suburban Homes
Mount Laurel remained largely agricultural until suburban growth from the Philadelphia area took hold in the later 1960s, and the township has kept growing since, reaching its highest population in the 2020 census. That means neighborhoods built across more than half a century, each reflecting the materials and building practices of its time. Siding on an earlier home may have been replaced once already; siding on a newer home may be original and just starting to show its age.
Knowing roughly when a house was built and whether its siding has been replaced helps us anticipate what we will find behind it, from the type of sheathing to whether a weather-resistive barrier was installed and how the windows were flashed.
Understanding House Wrap
The weather-resistive barrier, often called house wrap, is one of the most important and least visible parts of a wall. It sits between the siding and the sheathing and does two jobs: it sheds water that gets past the siding, and it lets water vapor from inside the wall escape. For it to work, it has to be lapped like shingles, with upper pieces over lower ones, so water always runs outward. Window and door flashing must be integrated with it in the right order, and tears or gaps must be patched.
When we remove damaged siding, we look at the wrap. Tears, missing sections, reverse laps where water is directed inward, and areas where the wrap was never installed are all common reasons a wall gets wet. Repairing the wrap properly is part of a good siding repair, not an extra.

Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding floats on the wall. Panels hook onto the course below and are fastened loosely through slotted holes so they can expand and contract. A damaged panel can usually be unlocked and replaced without disturbing the rest of the wall. A loose but undamaged panel can often be reseated. Waves across a wall usually point to courses nailed too tightly, and re-hanging them corrects it.
Vinyl fades in the sun, and colors and profiles get discontinued, so a replacement panel may not match a weathered wall exactly. We show you the closest available match and discuss options, such as moving original panels from a back wall to the front.
Fiber Cement, Wood and Cedar, and Aluminum
Fiber cement resists rot but can crack from impact or at joints. We replace damaged boards, seal joints as required, and repaint.
Wood and cedar can split, cup, or rot where water collects. We replace damaged pieces and fix the moisture source.
Aluminum dents easily and its finish chalks with age. We replace damaged sections and tell you if an older profile is hard to match.
Recognizing Siding Problems
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.
- Loose: panels lifting or rattling in wind
- Cracked: splits from impact
- Warped: waves on sunny walls or melted spots near grills
- Missing: sections torn away by wind
- Trim damage: loose corner posts, split J-channel
- Moisture clues: stains, peeling trim paint, swollen sills
Storm and Wind Damage
Summer thunderstorms and nor’easters can lift loose siding and peel it off corners and gables, and branches from mature trees crack panels and dent trim. After a storm, check your walls from the ground and photograph damage before cleanup. Keep pieces that blew off. Do not climb ladders or go onto the roof.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides what is covered. We can document what we find, explain the repairs needed to protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Where Water Gets In
Besides gaps in the house wrap, we check:
- Kick-out flashing at roof-to-wall joints
- Window and door flashing
- Gutters that overflow onto walls
- The bottom course and its clearance above soil and mulch
- Openings for vents, lights, and pipes
Because we also repair roofs and gutters, we can fix the source. Our Mount Laurel gutter cleaning page explains how gutters protect walls.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia boards close the roof edge and carry gutters; soffit closes the overhang and vents the attic. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag, and damaged soffit gives birds and insects a way in. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check whether a roof or gutter problem started the damage. Our Mount Laurel roofing page covers roof work.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually makes sense when damage is limited and the rest of the siding is sound. Replacement deserves discussion when:
- Several walls are damaged or brittle
- The house wrap is missing or failed over large areas
- Moisture has damaged sheathing
- Your siding can no longer be matched
- Repairs keep failing
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain the options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
On a full replacement, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a new weather-resistive barrier lapped correctly, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints, and fasten new siding with room for expansion and contraction. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum, and review product, profile, and color options with you during the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Mount Laurel construction office, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Can Siding Work Be Done in Cold Weather?
Siding repairs can be done in most seasons, with some adjustments. Vinyl is stiffer and more brittle in the cold, so it has to be handled and cut with more care, and fastening must still leave room for the panels to expand when the weather warms. Caulks and sealants have temperature limits for proper curing, and paint on wood or fiber cement needs suitable conditions. We plan around the weather, and if a repair involves materials that should wait for warmer days, we protect the wall in the meantime and explain the timing.
Seasonal Care
- Spring: look for winter damage and rinse mildew from shaded walls.
- Summer: keep grills away from vinyl and trim shrubs back.
- Fall: clean gutters after leaves drop.
- Winter: keep snow piles and shovels away from siding.
Inspect from the ground only. For upper walls, call a professional.
Near Parkers Creek and Rancocas State Park
Parkers Creek and the South Branch of Pennsauken Creek run through the township, and part of Rancocas State Park lies within it. Homes near creeks and parkland often sit among mature trees, which bring shade, leaf-filled gutters, and the occasional falling limb. Shaded walls dry more slowly after rain and tend to grow mildew. Keeping branches trimmed back from the house, cleaning gutters after the leaves fall, and rinsing shaded walls gently each spring help siding in these settings last.
Matching Options When Colors Are Discontinued
If your siding color or profile is no longer made, there are still practical choices. Original panels can be taken from a less visible wall, such as behind a deck or on the back of the house, and used where damage is most visible, with new panels going in out of sight. A single elevation can be re-sided so it matches itself. Corner posts can provide a natural break between old and new. Or, if the siding across the house is faded or worn, a full replacement may be worth discussing. We go through these choices before any work starts.
When to Call
- Siding is missing, cracked, or hanging
- Panels flap in the wind
- A wall looks wavy
- Trim or fascia is soft
- Gutters are pulling away
