Old Tappan is a borough of about 5,900 residents, and about a fifth of its area is water. Its colonial roots are preserved in four National Register houses associated with the Haring family. With Dutch colonial history in the area, the gambrel-roofed Dutch Colonial style is a familiar sight, and that style shapes the walls as much as the roof. This page looks at siding on gambrel homes along with our everyday repairs.

Siding on Gambrel and Dutch Colonial Homes

A gambrel roof has two slopes on each side, a steep lower slope and a shallower upper one, creating the barn-like profile of many Dutch Colonial homes. That design affects the siding in a few specific ways.

Tall gable-end walls

The ends of a gambrel house are tall walls shaped like the roof profile, with siding running up into the peak and cut along four roof lines instead of two. Those angled cuts at the rakes need J-channel or rake trim that sheds water, and the upper gable takes the full force of wind. Loose siding high on a gable end is common after storms and hard to see clearly from the ground.

Dormers on the steep lower slope

Dormers are common on gambrel roofs, often running much of the length of the house. Each dormer has sided cheek walls sitting right on the steep lower slope, and a face wall with windows. Step flashing along the cheek walls must be layered with the shingles and covered by the siding, with a gap so the siding does not sit in water running down the roof. The steepness of the lower slope sends water past those joints quickly, so any flashing gap shows up as rot along the bottom of the cheek walls.

Where the gambrel meets the wall

On many gambrel homes, the lower slope meets the first-floor wall at the eaves. That joint, with its soffit and fascia, takes heavy runoff from two slopes. Gutters there need to be sized for it, and fascia and soffit need to stay sound.

Ice dams

With living space tucked under the gambrel, there is often little attic space, which makes ice dams more likely. Meltwater backing up at the eaves can stain soffit and the top of the siding below.

Vinyl Siding Repair

Damaged vinyl panels can usually be replaced individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, remove the nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. On angled gable cuts, we trim new panels to fit the rake line and seat them in the channel.

Matching has honest limits. Vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, like moving original panels from a hidden wall.

Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum

  • Wood and cedar: shingles and clapboards suit Dutch Colonial homes. We replace split or rotted pieces, match exposure, prime all sides, and finish to blend.
  • Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, joints flashed, and new boards painted.
  • Aluminum: dented or loose sections are replaced where profiles can be matched.

Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding

General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.

  • Loose siding: panels that rattle or have unlocked, often high on gables.
  • Cracked siding: impact, age, or cold brittleness.
  • Warped siding: ripples from tight nailing or heat.
  • Missing siding: pieces torn off by wind.
  • Rot at dormer bottoms: siding and trim decaying where cheek walls meet the roof.
  • Damaged trim: split rake trim, bent J-channel, rotted sills.

Homes Near the Water

With Lake Tappan and the Hackensack River on the borough’s western side, homes near the water can see more wind on exposed walls and more moisture in the air. Walls facing the water may grow mildew more readily, and wood trim there needs finishing more often. Keeping gutters flowing and plantings trimmed back from the walls helps them dry.

Storm Damaged Siding Repair

After a storm, walk around your house and look from the ground. On gambrel homes, check gable ends and dormer walls with binoculars or a phone zoom. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders or go onto the steep lower slope.

If you file an insurance claim, your insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.

Moisture Behind Siding

Siding is a rain screen. A weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it carry incidental water out. Problems begin when water gets in faster than it drains or dries. Common sources:

  • Dormer cheek walls without proper step flashing
  • Ice dams at the eaves
  • Gutters overwhelmed by runoff from two slopes
  • Missing kick-out flashing
  • Windows and doors without proper flashing

Signs include stains, peeling paint, swelling, soft spots, and musty smells near an outside wall. Because we also handle roofing and gutters, we look at what is above a damaged wall. Our Old Tappan gutter cleaning page explains more.

Historic Homes

For Old Tappan’s oldest houses, siding work calls for care where wood meets masonry walls and chimneys, attention to old framing and board sheathing, and respect for the building’s character. If your home is a designated historic property, let us know at the estimate so we can plan around it.

Repair or Replace?

Repair usually works when damage is limited to a few pieces or one wall. Replacement is worth discussing when:

  • Dormer walls are rotting along their length
  • Several walls are damaged
  • Moisture damage behind the siding is widespread
  • Matching pieces are unavailable
  • Other exterior or roof work is planned

We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Old Tappan, we look at the siding and the wall behind it and explain your options.

Siding Installation and Replacement

For a full re-side, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every opening, dormer, and roof-to-wall joint, and fasten new siding with room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options that suit a Dutch Colonial or any other style. Tall gables need careful staging, which we plan at the estimate.

Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Old Tappan construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.

Soffit, Fascia, and Trim

Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, and fascia carries the gutters. On gambrel homes, the eave at the bottom of the steep lower slope collects a lot of water, and when gutters overflow or drip edge is missing, the fascia behind them rots. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag and pull loose, sending even more water down the siding. Soffit there may also hold the only intake vents for a cramped upper floor. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim, keep vents open, and check whether the gutters or roof edge caused the damage.

Seasonal Siding Care

  • Spring: check dormer cheek walls and gables for winter damage.
  • Summer: trim branches back from walls and roof edges.
  • Fall: clean gutters along the eaves.
  • Winter: watch for ice dams at the eaves.

Check from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.

Signs to Call a Siding Contractor

  1. Loose or missing siding on a gable end
  2. Rot along the bottom of dormer walls
  3. Cracked, missing, or hanging siding
  4. Stains below the eaves after winter
  5. Soft or rotted trim
  6. Gutters overflowing onto the siding
