Ramsey is a borough of about 14,800 residents on five and a half square miles in northern Bergen County. It is almost entirely developed, yet keeps a rural feel thanks to permanently preserved open space, and its Main Street station, built in 1868, is considered the oldest operating passenger station in New Jersey. Because chimneys and siding meet on so many homes, and that meeting point causes so many wall problems, this page takes a close look at where siding and chimneys connect, along with our everyday repair work.

Where Siding Meets the Chimney
Masonry chimneys on an exterior wall
Many homes have a brick or stone chimney running up an outside wall. The vertical joints where siding meets the masonry are weak points. Siding should end in a J-channel or trim board with a gap and sealant at the brick, and flashing behind the siding should turn water away from the joint. Over time, mortar erodes, sealant dries out, and the joint opens, letting rain run behind the siding along the chimney.
Where the chimney passes the roof
At the roofline, step flashing and counter-flashing seal the chimney to the roof. If that flashing fails, water can travel down inside the wall beside the chimney, staining siding and rotting sheathing below the roof edge. What looks like a siding problem may start at the chimney flashing above it.
Framed and sided chimney chases
Some homes have a framed chimney chase, a boxed-in enclosure around a metal flue, that is covered in siding instead of masonry. The top of the chase is capped with a metal chase cover. When that cover rusts, sags, or holds water, it can leak straight down inside the chase, rotting the framing and loosening the siding from within. Rust streaks running down chase siding are a common warning sign.
Signs of trouble
- Stains or streaks on siding next to the chimney
- Soft or swollen trim where siding meets brick
- Peeling paint on interior walls near the chimney
- Rust streaks on a sided chase
- Gaps or cracked sealant along the chimney-siding joint
Because we also provide chimney repair in Ramsey, we can look at both sides of the joint at once and fix the flashing, masonry, and siding together.

- Re-securing loose courses and corner posts
- Repairing siding and trim at chimney joints and chases

We look for the cause first. A stain beside a chimney is rarely fixed by caulk alone.
Vinyl Siding Repair
Damaged vinyl panels can usually be replaced individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, remove the nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. Loose panels are re-hung, and buckled sections are refastened.
Matching has honest limits. Vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, like moving original panels from a hidden wall.
Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum
- Wood and cedar: we replace split or rotted pieces, prime all sides, and paint to blend.
- Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, joints flashed, and new boards painted.
- Aluminum: dented or loose sections are replaced where profiles can be matched.
Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding
General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.
- Loose siding: panels that rattle, bow, or have come unlocked.
- Cracked siding: impact, age, or cold brittleness.
- Warped siding: ripples from tight nailing or heat.
- Missing siding: pieces torn off by wind.
- Damaged trim: split corners, bent J-channel, rotted sills.
Storm Damaged Siding Repair
Strong storms can strip loose siding and send branches into walls. After a storm, walk around your house and look from the ground for missing, cracked, or hanging pieces. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders or go onto the roof to inspect a chimney.
If you file an insurance claim, your insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Behind Siding
Siding is a rain screen. A weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it carry incidental water out. Problems begin when water gets in faster than it drains or dries. Common sources:
- Chimney flashing and chimney-siding joints
- Rusted chase covers
- Missing kick-out flashing at roof-to-wall joints
- Overflowing gutters
- Windows and doors without proper flashing
Signs include stains, peeling paint, swelling, soft spots, and musty smells near an outside wall. Because we also handle roofing and gutters, we look at what is above a damaged wall. Our Ramsey gutter cleaning page explains more.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, and fascia carries the gutters. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag and overflow onto the siding. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check whether the roof edge or gutters caused the damage.
Repair or Replace?
Repair usually works when damage is limited to a few pieces or one wall. Replacement is worth discussing when:
- Several walls are damaged
- Siding is brittle and cracks or loosens repeatedly
- Moisture damage behind the siding is widespread
- Matching pieces are unavailable
- Other exterior or chimney work is planned
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Ramsey, we look at the siding and the wall behind it and explain your options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
For a full re-side, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every opening, chimney joint, and roof-to-wall joint, and fasten new siding with room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options with you at the estimate. Re-siding is also a good time to address chimney flashing and chase covers.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Ramsey construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Open Space and Mature Trees
Ramsey’s preserved open space and mature trees give the borough its rural ambience, and they also affect siding. Homes next to open land may see stronger wind on exposed walls. Trees near the house drop leaves into gutters, shade walls so they dry slowly, and occasionally drop limbs in storms. Trimming branches back and cleaning gutters regularly protect siding as well as the roof.
Older Homes Near Main Street
With a passenger station dating to 1868 and the Old Stone House recalling its Dutch farmhouse past, Ramsey has a long building history, and some homes near the older parts of town have been standing for many decades. Older houses may have original wood siding beneath later vinyl or aluminum, board sheathing instead of plywood, and little or no wall wrap. When we open a wall on one of these homes, we check what is there before deciding how to fasten and tie in new material. Where original wood siding is sound and visible, repairing only the damaged pieces and repainting can keep the character of the house intact.

Check from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.
