Rockaway Borough is a compact community of about two square miles along the Rockaway River, separate from the much larger Rockaway Township around it. Many homes are long-standing, often with porches and rear additions under flat or low-slope roofs, and many sit on smaller lots. That combination shapes how we approach siding repair here, from flashing details at low roofs to protecting the house next door. We serve the borough from our main headquarters in East Rutherford and our regional location in Hackettstown.

Siding Where Walls Meet Low Roofs
Porches and rear additions with flat or low-slope roofs are common on older homes, and the spot where that low roof meets the main house wall is one of the most important details on the whole exterior:
- Clearance: siding should stop a short distance above the roof surface. When it runs right down onto the roof, the bottom edge sits in water and snow, wicking moisture into the siding and the wall.
- Flashing: a metal flashing should turn up the wall behind the siding and lap onto the roof, so water running down the wall lands on the roof, not inside the joint.
- Trim and J-channel: where siding ends above a low roof, the trim or channel at the bottom edge needs to drain, not trap water.
- Snow: low roofs collect snow against the wall above them. As it melts, water runs along that joint for days, testing every gap.
When we repair siding near one of these joints, we check the flashing and clearance too. Because we also do roofing, we can fix both sides of the joint at once.

Working on Smaller Lots
On a compact lot, a side wall may be only a few feet from the neighbor’s house or fence. That affects how a siding job is staged:
- We plan ladder and staging placement so we can reach the wall safely without damaging fences, plantings, or the neighboring property.
- On larger jobs, we talk through where a dumpster or debris trailer can go without blocking a driveway or the street.
- Debris and scraps are cleaned up as we go, so nothing blows into a neighbor’s yard.
- If access requires stepping onto a neighbor’s property, we coordinate with you first.
Siding Along Busy Roads
Homes near U.S. Route 46 or other busy roads face a few extra siding nuisances: road grime that dulls the finish, salt spray and slush thrown by passing traffic in winter, and gravel or debris kicked up by plows. None of this is unusual, but it is worth a quick look each spring. A gentle wash with a soft brush and garden hose removes most grime from vinyl and painted siding. Avoid pressure washers aimed up under the laps, which can push water behind the panels. Look closely at the bottom courses and corners nearest the road for chips or cracks from plowed snow and debris, and replace damaged pieces before water gets behind them.
Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding is a system of interlocking panels hung from nails driven loosely through slotted holes, so each panel can move as it expands and contracts. To replace a damaged panel, we unlock it from the course below, remove the nails, slide in a new panel, and lock it back in. We also fix buckling caused by tight nailing.
Vinyl fades over time, and colors and profiles get discontinued. A new panel may not perfectly match a weathered wall. We find the closest match and can move an original panel from a less visible side wall to the repair.
Fiber Cement, Wood and Cedar, Aluminum
Fiber cement resists rot but can crack from impact. We replace damaged boards with correct fastening and clearances and paint to blend.
Wood and cedar splits, cups, and rots where water sits, especially at low roof joints and the bottom of walls. We replace damaged pieces and fix the cause.
Aluminum dents and chalks. We replace damaged panels when a matching profile can be found, and are upfront when one cannot.
Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site:
- Loose: failed nails, torn hems, or panels never fully locked.
- Cracked: impacts, especially when vinyl is cold and stiff.
- Warped or buckled: nailing that prevents movement, or heat reflected from a neighboring wall.
- Missing: wind lifting a weak course.
- Trim and corners: split J-channel, loose corner posts, rotted trim.
Cover missing siding quickly so weather cannot reach the wall behind it.
Storm Damaged Siding Repair
Thunderstorms and nor’easters can strip siding at corners and gables, and branches crack panels and bend trim. After a storm, look from the ground, photograph damage before cleanup, and keep pieces that came off.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides coverage. We can document what we find and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Intrusion
Some water always gets past siding, and the barrier and flashing beneath it carry that water out. When those layers fail, the wall stays wet. Common sources:
- Missing or failed flashing where low porch or addition roofs meet the house
- Missing kick-out flashing at the bottom of sloped roof-to-wall joints
- Overflowing or leaking gutters
- Windows and doors without proper flashing
- Siding touching soil, steps, or roof surfaces
- Cracked or missing panels
Signs include streaks, peeling paint, swollen trim, soft spots, and musty smells indoors near exterior walls. We also handle gutters and can fix drainage at the same visit. See our Rockaway gutter cleaning page.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia carries the gutters; soffit encloses the overhang. When fascia rots, gutters sag. When soffit is damaged, pests get in. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check the gutters and roof edge for the cause.
Repair or Siding Replacement?
Repair is usually the right choice when damage is limited and the rest of the siding is sound. Replacement is worth considering when damage spans several walls, siding is brittle or repeatedly loose, moisture damage is widespread, or matching parts are unavailable. We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain our recommendation.
Siding Installation
For a full siding installation, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and every roof-to-wall joint, including low porch and addition roofs, and install new siding with correct fastening and room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and review product, profile, and color options with you at the estimate.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Rockaway Borough construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Seasonal Siding Care
- Spring: look at the siding just above porch and addition roofs for staining or swelling after winter.
- Summer: watch for waves in vinyl, especially on walls that face a neighbor’s light-colored wall or windows.
- Fall: clean gutters so they do not overflow onto low roofs and walls.
- Winter: ice dams can form when attic heat melts snow that refreezes at the eaves, sending meltwater down walls. Keep snow away from the siding where you can do it safely from the ground.
Never climb onto a porch roof or ladder to check siding; call a professional instead.
Local Considerations in Rockaway Borough
Rockaway is a borough of about 6,600 residents named for the Rockaway River and bordered by Denville Township and Rockaway Township. Interstate 80 clips its northeast corner and U.S. Route 46 runs through the southern end. With about 2,600 housing units on two square miles, many long-standing homes with porches and rear additions, and smaller lots, siding work here centers on low-roof flashing details and careful staging.
Signs It Is Time to Call
- Siding cracked, loose, or missing
- Stains or swelling just above a porch or addition roof
- Wavy walls
- Soft trim or rotted fascia
- Gutters sagging or overflowing
