Rockleigh is one of the smallest municipalities in New Jersey, a borough of about 400 residents on a single square mile at the northern edge of Bergen County, with large homes on large plots of land and a long history reflected in houses such as the Haring-Corning House. Homes like these often have decks, porches, and terraces against the walls, and those are some of the most common places for siding and the wall behind it to fail. This page looks at that closely.

Siding Around Decks, Porches, and Terraces

Deck ledgers

A deck attached to the house hangs from a ledger board bolted to the wall. Above the ledger, flashing must tuck up behind the siding and the weather-resistive barrier and lap down over the ledger, so water running down the wall is shed onto the deck framing instead of into the house. When that flashing is missing, water soaks the ledger, the rim of the house, and the sheathing, sometimes for years before anything shows. Soft siding or trim just above a deck, or stains on the ceiling or wall below it inside, are warning signs.

Clearance above deck and terrace surfaces

Siding should stop a short distance above a deck or terrace surface rather than running down to touch it. Siding that sits on the deck boards or on a stone or concrete terrace wicks water up, stays wet, and rots or swells at the bottom. Snow piled on a deck against the wall makes it worse.

Porch roofs

Covered porches have roofs that meet the house wall. Where a porch roof meets siding, step or counter flashing tucked behind the siding and kick-out flashing at the lower end keep water out of the wall. Stains or soft siding just above a porch roof often point to a flashing problem there.

Doors to decks and terraces

Sliding and French doors onto decks and terraces see splashback, standing water, and foot traffic. The sill pan and flashing below and beside the door need to direct water out; when they do not, the siding and trim beside and below the door rot first.

Large Homes on Large Lots

Larger homes have complex walls with many gables, dormers, and chimneys, and big roofs that send a lot of water to the gutters. Wooded lots add leaves that clog gutters, shade that slows drying, and branches that can damage siding in storms. Winters bring snow and ice dams on homes with warm attics. We plan work to protect lawns, gardens, and long driveways and clean up thoroughly when finished.

Vinyl Siding Repair

Damaged vinyl panels can usually be replaced individually. We unlock the panel from the course below, remove the nails, and lock in a replacement fastened loosely so it can expand and contract. Loose panels are re-hung, and buckled sections are refastened.

Matching has honest limits. Vinyl fades and colors and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match a weathered wall. We find the closest available match and explain options, like moving original panels from a hidden wall.

Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum

  • Wood and cedar: we replace split or rotted pieces, prime all sides, and paint or stain to blend.
  • Fiber cement: cracked boards are replaced, joints flashed, edges sealed, and new boards painted. Clearance above decks matters especially for fiber cement.
  • Aluminum: dented or loose sections are replaced where profiles can be matched.

Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding

General homeowner information; we confirm the cause on site.

  • Loose siding: panels that rattle, bow, or have come unlocked.
  • Cracked siding: impact, falling limbs, age, or cold brittleness.
  • Warped or swollen siding: heat, tight nailing, or siding sitting in water on a deck.
  • Missing siding: pieces torn off by wind.
  • Damaged trim: rotted sills, corner boards, and door trim.

Storm Damaged Siding Repair

On wooded lots, storm damage often comes from branches as much as wind. After a storm, walk around your house and look from the ground for missing, cracked, or hanging pieces. Photograph damage before anything is moved. Do not climb ladders or go near limbs resting on the house.

If you file an insurance claim, your insurer decides what is covered. We can document the damage, explain which repairs protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.

Moisture Behind Siding

Siding is a rain screen. A weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it carry incidental water out. Problems begin when water gets in faster than it drains or dries. Common sources:

  • Missing ledger flashing above decks
  • Siding touching deck or terrace surfaces
  • Porch roofs meeting walls without proper flashing
  • Gutters overflowing from large roofs
  • Windows and doors without proper flashing

Signs include stains, peeling paint, swelling, soft spots, and musty smells near an outside wall. Because we also handle roofing and gutters, we look at what is above a damaged wall. Our Rockleigh gutter cleaning page explains more.

Soffit, Fascia, and Trim

Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, and fascia carries the gutters. On large roofs, overflowing gutters rot the fascia behind them. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim and check whether the roof edge or gutters caused the damage.

Older and Historic Homes

For older houses, siding work calls for attention to old framing and board sheathing, original wood siding and trim worth repairing, and the building’s character. If your property is designated, let us know at the estimate.

Repair or Replace?

Repair usually works when damage is limited to a few pieces or one wall. Replacement is worth discussing when:

  • Several walls are damaged
  • Rot extends behind the siding at decks or porches
  • Siding is brittle and cracks or loosens repeatedly
  • Matching pieces are unavailable
  • A deck, porch, or other exterior project is planned

We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate in Rockleigh, we look at the siding and the wall behind it and explain your options.

Siding Installation and Replacement

For a full re-side, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every opening, ledger, and roof-to-wall joint, and fasten new siding with proper clearances and room for expansion. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and go over product, profile, and color options with you at the estimate.

Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Rockleigh construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.

Replacing a Deck? Think About the Siding

If you are planning to rebuild or replace a deck, it is the ideal moment to look at the wall behind it. With the old deck removed, the ledger area is exposed, and any rot in the rim, sheathing, or siding can be repaired properly. New ledger flashing can be installed and lapped correctly with the wall wrap and siding before the new deck goes on. Coordinating the siding work with your deck builder avoids closing up a wall that still has a problem behind it. We are glad to work alongside your deck contractor so the flashing ties in correctly.

Seasonal Siding Care

  • Spring: look at siding just above decks and porch roofs for stains or soft spots.
  • Summer: keep planters and furniture from sitting against siding on decks.
  • Fall: clean gutters after leaf drop.
  • Winter: shovel snow away from walls on decks and terraces.

Check from the ground only, and call a professional for anything high.

Signs to Call a Siding Contractor

  1. Soft siding or trim just above a deck
  2. Siding touching a deck or terrace surface
  3. Stains above a porch roof
  4. Rot beside a deck or terrace door
  5. Cracked, missing, or hanging siding
  6. Gutters overflowing onto the siding
