Washington Borough grew as a transportation and manufacturing town, becoming a center for musical instrument making, especially organs, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Victorian-style houses from that era still stand among the borough’s roughly 3,200 homes. Their steep roofs, turrets, dormers, bay roofs, and porches create many places where siding meets a roof, and those joints are where water most often gets in. We serve the borough from our main headquarters in East Rutherford and our regional location in Port Murray.

Bay Windows, Porches, and Siding on Victorian Homes

Victorian houses combine steep main roofs with smaller roofs over bays and porches, and each one meets a sided wall:

  • Bay window roofs are small and often low-slope. Where they meet the wall above, flashing must turn up behind the siding, and the siding must stop above the roof surface. Leaks here often show up as stains inside, above or beside the bay.
  • Siding on the bay itself wraps several angled faces, with trim at each corner. Joints at those angles need to shed water, and the trim at the base of the bay takes splash and snow.
  • Porch roofs meet the house wall along a long joint. Siding and trim just above them stay wet if flashing or clearance is wrong.
  • Porch ceilings and trim are usually wood and rot where water drips from a failing gutter or flashing.
  • Dormer sidewalls need step flashing tucked behind the siding.

Because we repair roofs as well as siding, we can fix both sides of these joints.

Board Sheathing and Old Framing

Houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s typically have board sheathing and framing altered over the years. When we open a damaged section, we check the boards for rot, repair them, and add or patch the weather-resistive barrier so the wall sheds water properly. Siding on older walls may have been replaced or covered more than once, and we explain what we find.

Vinyl Siding Repair

On homes clad in vinyl, panels interlock and hang from nails driven loosely through slotted holes so they can move with temperature. A damaged panel can be unlocked from the course below, removed, and replaced with a new one locked into place. Fastening must reach solid backing, which on board sheathing means hitting the boards.

Vinyl fades and colors and profiles get discontinued, so a new panel may not exactly match. We find the closest match and can move an original panel from a hidden wall to the visible repair.

Wood, Fiber Cement, and Aluminum

Wood siding and shingles on Victorian homes can last a long time with paint and good drainage. We replace split or rotted pieces with matching profiles as closely as possible, prime and paint them, and fix the moisture source.

Fiber cement resists rot and holds paint, and can suit homes where a painted wood look is wanted. It can crack from impact. We replace damaged boards and paint to blend.

Aluminum dents and chalks. We replace damaged panels when a matching profile can be found and tell you upfront if not.

Loose, Cracked, Warped, or Missing Siding

General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.

  • Loose: nails that have rusted or missed solid boards, or vinyl that has unlocked.
  • Cracked or split: impacts, cold-weather brittleness, or old wood that has dried out.
  • Warped: vinyl nailed too tight, or wood cupping from moisture.
  • Missing: wind removing a weak piece, often on a turret or gable.
  • Trim and corners: rotted bay and porch trim, split J-channel.

Cover missing siding quickly to protect the wall.

Storm Damaged Siding Repair

Thunderstorms, nor’easters, and winter storms can strip siding at corners, gables, and turrets. After a storm, look from the ground, photograph damage before cleanup, and keep any original pieces that came off.

If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides coverage. We can document what we find and provide a written estimate.

Moisture Intrusion

Some water always gets past siding, and the layers beneath it carry that water out. On older homes, those layers may be worn or missing. Common sources:

  1. Flashing at bay roofs and porch roofs
  2. Step flashing at dormers
  3. Worn chimney flashing
  4. Gutters clogged or overflowing
  5. Windows without proper head flashing

Signs include streaks, peeling paint, swollen trim, soft spots, and stains inside above bays or porches. We also handle gutters and can fix drainage at the same time. See our Washington Borough gutter cleaning page.

Soffit, Fascia, and Trim

Fascia carries the gutters; soffit encloses the overhang. On Victorian homes, both are usually wood and can include decorative details. We repair and replace soffit, fascia, and trim, matching profiles as closely as we can, and check gutters and the roof edge for the cause.

Repair or Siding Replacement?

On Victorian homes, targeted repair often makes sense when the siding is mostly sound. Replacement deserves discussion when rot is widespread, moisture damage is extensive, or matching is not possible. We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain our recommendation.

Siding Installation

For full siding replacement, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash every opening and roof-to-wall joint, and install new siding with correct fastening and room for movement. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum siding and review product, profile, and color options at the estimate.

Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Washington Borough construction office before major exterior work, and we can discuss it during your estimate.

Masonry Chimneys

Older homes may have masonry chimneys that have lost mortar or developed cracked crowns. Water that gets into a chimney can reach the wall beside it, showing up as stains on nearby siding or trim. Because we repair chimneys as well as siding, we look at both.

Turrets and Curved or Angled Walls

Turrets and towers are a hallmark of many Victorian homes, and their siding is fitted in short runs around curved or angled faces. Each facet has trim at its edges, and the roof above often comes to a point that meets the siding at a tight joint. Damage on a turret is hard to see from the ground and harder to reach, so it can go unnoticed. When repairing turret siding, pieces are cut and fitted individually, and the flashing at the top and bottom of the tower deserves close attention. Binoculars from the yard are the safest way to check these upper walls between visits.

Seasonal Siding Care

  • Spring: look above bays and porches for stains or soft trim.
  • Summer: touch up bare wood before it weathers.
  • Fall: clean gutters after leaves drop.
  • Winter: keep snow off walls and watch for ice at the eaves.

Inspect from the ground, and call a professional for anything high.

Local Considerations in Washington Borough

Washington Borough has about 7,300 residents on two square miles, completely surrounded by Washington Township. The United Methodist Church on Washington Avenue is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the borough’s population grew 13 percent between 2010 and 2020. Victorian homes, board sheathing, and many roof-to-wall joints are the main factors for siding here.

Signs to Call a Siding Contractor

  • Rotted trim around bays or porch ceilings
  • Split or missing clapboards or shingles
