Two Kinds of Neighborhoods
Chesterfield’s character comes from two very different kinds of places. Its historic villages, including Crosswicks, where a Revolutionary War cannonball has been lodged in the Friends Meeting House since 1778, have homes built and rebuilt over generations. Old York Village, a 560-acre neo-traditional community built from the early 2000s and mostly complete by 2024, is planned around walkable streets and traditional-looking homes.
The siding concerns differ. In the older villages, homes may have wood clapboard or shingles, sometimes covered by later siding, with trim and flashing that have been patched over the years. Repairs there call for careful matching and a close look at what lies behind the siding. In Old York Village, the homes are newer, but siding installed in the early 2000s has now seen two decades of sun and weather. Fading, loose courses, failing caulk at trim, and the occasional flashing detail that was not done quite right are typical things to watch for.
Open Farmland and Wind
More than 7,000 acres of farmland in Chesterfield are permanently preserved. Homes next to open fields have little to slow the wind, so walls facing open ground can take stronger gusts during summer thunderstorms and nor’easters. Loose siding on those walls tends to get worse quickly. Checking exposed walls after storms and re-securing loose pieces promptly helps prevent a small problem from turning into a stripped wall.

Vinyl Siding Repair
Vinyl siding is designed to move. Panels hook onto the course below and are nailed loosely through slotted holes at the top so they can expand and contract with the seasons. A damaged panel can usually be unlocked and replaced without disturbing the rest of the wall. Panels that have popped loose can often be reseated, and walls that ripple can be corrected by re-hanging courses that were nailed too tightly.
Vinyl fades in sunlight, and colors and profiles get discontinued, so a new panel may not match a weathered wall exactly. In a planned community where neighboring homes are similar, matching matters even more. We show you the closest available match first and discuss options, such as moving original panels to the most visible wall.
Fiber Cement, Wood and Cedar, and Aluminum
Fiber cement boards resist rot but can crack from impact or at joints, and painted fiber cement eventually needs fresh paint. We replace damaged boards, seal joints as required, and repaint.
Wood and cedar siding is repairable piece by piece. We replace split, cupped, or rotted pieces, prime and paint new wood as agreed, and fix the water source.
Aluminum dents easily and its finish chalks. We replace damaged sections and tell you if an older profile is hard to match.
Recognizing Siding Problems
General homeowner information; we confirm causes on site.
- Panels that are loose, rattling, or out of line
- Cracks and holes from impact
- Waves on sunny walls
- Missing pieces after wind
- Gaps where caulk has failed at trim and windows
- Peeling paint or soft wood on older homes
Storm Damage
Summer thunderstorms and nor’easters can drive wind across open fields and bring down branches near the villages. Wind peels loose siding from corners and gables; debris cracks panels and dents trim. After a storm, look at your walls from the ground and photograph damage before cleanup. Keep pieces that blew off. Do not climb ladders or go onto the roof.
If you file an insurance claim, the insurer decides what is covered. We can document what we find, explain the repairs needed to protect the wall, and provide a written estimate.
Moisture Behind Siding
Siding sheds most water, but the weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it keep the wall dry. Older homes may have little or no barrier. We check:
- Kick-out flashing at roof-to-wall joints
- Window and door flashing
- Gutters that overflow onto walls
- The bottom course and its clearance above soil and mulch
- Openings for vents, lights, and pipes
Because we also repair roofs and gutters, we can fix the source. Our Chesterfield Township gutter cleaning page explains how gutters protect walls.
Soffit, Fascia, and Trim
Fascia boards close the roof edge and carry gutters; soffit closes the overhang and vents the attic. Rotted fascia lets gutters sag; damaged soffit lets animals in. On homes designed with traditional details, trim is a big part of the look, and we match it as closely as practical. Our Chesterfield Township roofing page covers roof work.
Repair or Replace?
Repair is usually the answer for limited damage on sound siding. Replacement deserves discussion when:
- Several walls are damaged, brittle, or badly faded
- Moisture has damaged sheathing over large areas
- Your siding can no longer be matched
- Repairs keep failing
We do not decide from a photo. At a free siding estimate, we look at the siding and the wall behind damaged areas and explain your options.
Siding Installation and Replacement
On a full replacement, we remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing, install a weather-resistive barrier, flash windows, doors, and roof-to-wall joints, and fasten new siding with room for expansion and contraction. We install vinyl, fiber cement, wood and cedar, and aluminum, and review product, profile, and color options with you during the estimate. If your community has guidelines for exterior materials or colors, share them and we will work within them.
Permit requirements depend on scope. Check with the Chesterfield Township construction office, and we can discuss it during your estimate.
Caulk and Sealant at Trim
On many newer homes, caulk seals the joints where siding meets window trim, door casings, and corner boards, especially with fiber cement and wood. Caulk does not last forever. Sun and seasonal movement make it shrink, crack, and pull away, opening small gaps that let water reach the trim and the wall behind. Checking caulked joints every few years and resealing where needed is simple upkeep. With vinyl, the rules are different: most vinyl joints are designed to stay open so panels can move and water can drain, and caulking them can trap moisture.
Porches, Columns, and Traditional Details
Traditional-style homes, whether two centuries old or built in the last twenty years, often feature front porches, columns, and detailed trim. These are also some of the places where water causes trouble. Porch ceilings and beams sit right where wind-driven rain lands. The base of a column or post can wick up water from the porch floor. Trim boards around a porch roof need flashing where they meet the main wall. When we repair siding near a porch, we look at these details too, so that a new wall section is not undermined by a leak a few feet away.
Seasonal Care
- Spring: look over exposed walls for winter damage and failed caulk.
- Summer: keep grills away from vinyl and watch sunny walls for waves.
- Fall: clean gutters after leaves drop.
- Winter: keep snow piles away from siding.
Inspect from the ground only. For upper walls, call a professional.
When to Call
- Siding is missing, cracked, or hanging
- Panels flap in the wind
- Caulk has opened up at trim
- Trim or fascia is soft
- Gutters are pulling away
