Roof Repair Services in Dumont, NJ
The moment a leak appears tells a roofer almost as much as where it appears. Monarch Roofing & Construction handles roof repair in Dumont, NJ, and our first question on any leak call is simple: when does the water show up? The answer steers the inspection, and from there we fix what we find, whether that is a split plumbing collar, failed flashing, wind-lifted shingles, winter ice damage, a worn valley, a dripping skylight, or a tired porch roof. We offer temporary tarping after storm damage, free inspections, and written estimates. Our regional location is close by in Cresskill, and our main headquarters is in East Rutherford. Call or text (551) 241-0470.
Before it took the name Dumont in 1898, honoring first mayor Dumont Clarke, the borough was incorporated as Schraalenburgh. Today roughly 17,900 people live within its two square miles or so, between Bergenfield, Cresskill, Demarest, Haworth, New Milford, and Oradell, with Knickerbocker Road along the east side and Madison and Washington Avenues among the main streets. Houses here rarely sit vacant, and owners tend to know their homes well. That familiarity helps, because someone who has watched a stain through a few storms often holds the most useful clue to its cause.

Leak Timing: Seven Patterns and What They Suggest
Use these as a guide to what an inspection will focus on. None of them replaces looking at the roof, but each narrows the search.
Pattern 1: Any steady rain brings a drip
When water shows up with every ordinary shower, something is plainly open. Candidates include the flexible seal where a plumbing pipe leaves the roof (once it splits, rain rides the pipe inside), a gap where a shingle used to be, a fastener that has worked up through a shingle, or flashing around a skylight that has let go. The fix matches the cause: a new pipe seal with shingles reset over its top, a replacement shingle after checking the layer beneath, or a reset fastener and new shingle.
Pattern 2: Only sideways, wind-driven rain gets in
Some joints are dry in a calm rain and wet in a gale. Walls and dormers where step pieces of metal are tucked behind siding, the cap flashing let into a chimney’s mortar, siding near the roofline, and edge shingles whose adhesive has let go are the usual places. Knowing the wind direction during the leak points us to the right side of the house. Repairs range from rebuilding flashing at the joint to replacing creased edge shingles. If siding is the entry, our Dumont siding repair page explains that side.
Pattern 3: Only the biggest downpours cause trouble
Here volume is the problem. A valley that is worn or packed with leaves cannot carry the flow; a gutter fills and pushes water back under the bottom course; a flat section cannot drain fast enough. Repairs might mean new valley material, a cleared and re-pitched gutter, or work on a flat roof’s membrane and outlets.
Pattern 4: Water arrives as snow melts
This is the signature of ice at the roof edge. Warmth from the living space softens the snow cover from below, the runoff freezes again at the cold overhang, and later melt backs up behind that frozen lip and under the shingles. Look for stains near outside walls and above upstairs windows. Once the ice has gone, the soaked shingles, drip edge, and decking at the eave can be replaced; the attic heat and ventilation that set up the ice are worth discussing too.
Pattern 5: Stains on cold, dry days
If nothing fell from the sky, the roof is probably innocent. Humid indoor air can condense on chilly roof boards and drip, and a bath fan ducted into the attic does the same thing faster. The remedy is ventilation, air sealing, or rerouting the duct outdoors, not roofing, and we will say so.
Pattern 6: The leak began right after a storm
New damage is the obvious suspect: shingles stripped or folded back, flashing bent by wind or a limb, or a puncture from debris. A thorough wind damage roof repair replaces both the missing shingles and the ones nearby that are still attached but no longer bonded. If there is an open hole, temporary tarping comes first.
Pattern 7: Summer drips with no rain at all
Think air conditioning. A condensate line or a plumbing connection in the attic or upper wall is far more likely than the roof. That calls for an HVAC or plumbing repair.
Keep a Leak Log
Since timing matters so much, jot down a line each time water appears: date, weather, wind direction if it was windy, where the water showed, and roughly how much. Three or four entries can send the inspection straight to the cause.
From Pattern to Opening
The pattern narrows the field; finding the actual entry still takes work. Water that gets past the surface usually travels down the sheathing or along a rafter before it falls, so the opening may sit well uphill of the stain. We look over the roof above the stain, check each penetration, flashing joint, valley, and skylight in that area, and go into the attic for drip trails and darkened wood.
Chimneys in Dumont
Chimney leaks usually follow Pattern 2. The metal along the sides, the apron across the front, the cap flashing set into mortar, and the area behind the chimney all need to be sound. Tar smeared over any of it is a short-term patch; a durable repair replaces the metal. Brick, mortar, and crown problems are covered on our Dumont chimney repair page.
Shingle Work
Replacing shingles means lifting the course above, pulling old nails, sliding in new pieces, and fastening them so each overlaps the next. A faded roof rarely matches a fresh bundle, so a patch may show for a while; we bring the nearest available color. On older roofs, the shingles next to the repair can be stiff and crack when pried up, which can make the patch bigger than expected. We flag that before starting.
Porch and Addition Roofs
Low-slope roofs over porches and additions tend to follow Pattern 3. Split seams, lifted edges, and puddles that sit for days are the usual findings, along with trouble where the flat section turns up the house wall. Repairs address the specific seam, edge, or wall joint, or replace a membrane that is worn out.
Skylights
A skylight can fit almost any pattern. Flashing failures show in steady or windy rain, seal failures in steady rain, and condensation on cold, dry days. Sorting out which is the first step toward the right repair.
When a Storm Has Gone Through
Once the wind dies down, walk around the house. Shingle scraps on the lawn, a darker patch where the underlayment shows, a branch on the roof, or metal sticking out at an odd angle all justify a call. Take dated photos and keep off the ladder. If wind or a limb has opened the roof, we fasten a temporary tarp over the damage and come back for the permanent storm damage roof repair. Insurance coverage is the carrier’s decision; we supply photographs and a written estimate.
Fix It or Replace It?
A leak with one clear pattern on a roof that is otherwise in decent shape is a repair. When leaks show several different patterns at once, new ones appear every season, or the shingles are worn on every slope, replacement becomes a fair question. Layers, materials, whether a clean repair can be done, and how long you plan to stay all count. Our Dumont roofing company page covers replacement and includes a guide to flashing types.
Signs Worth a Call, Even Without a Drip
Not every roof problem announces itself with water on the floor. From the ground and inside the house, watch for:
- Brown rings or bubbling paint on top-floor ceilings, even faint ones
- Shingle pieces on the lawn after wind, or a strip of roof that looks a different shade
- Metal around the chimney or vent pipes that looks lifted, rusty, or smeared with tar
- Gutters spilling over the front edge during ordinary rain
- Granules piling up where downspouts empty
- Thick icicles or a ridge of ice along the eaves in winter
- A musty smell or damp insulation in the attic
Catching any of these early usually means a smaller repair than waiting for the first drip.
Preparing for the Inspection
To get the most from the visit, have your leak log handy, clear a path to the attic hatch, and point out any rooms where you have seen stains in the past, even if they dried up. If you know roughly when the roof was installed, or when any repairs were done, mention that too.
What the Free Inspection Covers
We go over the shingles, ridge, edges, valleys, flashing, vents, skylights, gutters, and any flat sections, and check the attic when it is safely reachable. You receive a written estimate. It is a roofer’s professional opinion, not an engineering study or an insurance inspection.
Dumont Through the Seasons
Winter brings snowmelt leaks and, on cold days, condensation stains. Spring downpours expose valley and gutter trouble. Summer thunderstorms bring sideways rain, and any stain that appears without rain points to air conditioning lines. Fall fills valleys and gutters with leaves; gutter cleaning in Dumont keeps water moving.

Dumont Roof Questions
Who repairs roofs in Dumont, NJ?
Monarch Roofing & Construction fixes roofs across Dumont, working from our regional location just over the line in Cresskill. Phone or text (551) 241-0470.
My roof leaks only when it is windy. Where should I look?
Wall and dormer flashing, chimney cap flashing, siding near the roofline, and edge shingles with broken seals are the usual suspects.
Stains appear on cold days without rain. Why?
Most likely condensation from moist indoor air or a fan venting into the attic rather than a roof leak.
Is it worth writing down when the leak happens?
Yes. Dates, weather, wind direction, and location help pinpoint the cause quickly.
Do I pay for the inspection?
No. The visit and written estimate cost nothing.
Can I book online?
Yes, or email monarchroofingnj@gmail.com, or call or text (551) 241-0470.
My stain dried up. Should I still call?
Yes. A stain that comes and goes usually means water is still getting in during certain weather. The inspection can find the source before it gets worse.
Does the inspection include the attic?
When the attic can be reached safely, yes. It is often where the clearest evidence of a leak’s path is found.
What if a storm opens the roof?
We fasten a temporary tarp over the damage and return for the permanent repair.
