Service Overview

Understanding asphalt shingle roofs

Asphalt shingles are the most widely used roof covering on homes in the region. They are made from a mat coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules that protect the asphalt from sunlight and give the roof its color.

There are two main styles. Three-tab shingles are flat, single-layer shingles with cutouts that create a uniform, repeating pattern. Architectural (dimensional or laminated) shingles have multiple layers bonded together, giving a thicker, more textured look. Many homeowners replacing a three-tab roof choose architectural shingles; we can explain the differences in appearance and construction.

Shingles also have to suit the roof. Asphalt shingles are designed for pitched roofs; on very low slopes they need extra underlayment precautions, and on nearly flat areas a different material is usually the right choice.

The shingles are only the top layer

A shingle roof depends on what is underneath: sound decking, underlayment, ice barrier at the eaves and valleys, drip edge, flashing and balanced ventilation. Manufacturers’ installation instructions specify many of these details, and skipping them is a common cause of early problems. When we quote a shingle roof, we spell out which of these components are included so you can compare estimates on equal terms.

Common Problems

Common asphalt shingle problems

How shingles look tells you a lot about the condition of the roof.

Curling or cupping

Edges turning up or the center sinking, often from age, heat or ventilation issues.

Granule loss

Bare patches on shingles and granules collecting in gutters and at downspouts.

Lifted or missing tabs

Wind catching shingle edges, especially along rakes, ridges and eaves.

Cracked shingles

Splits from age, impact or thermal movement that let water reach the underlayment.

Moss and dark streaks

Growth that holds moisture against shingles on shaded slopes.

Wavy roof lines

Uneven shingle rows that can point to decking or installation problems underneath.

Repair or Replace

Repair the shingles or replace the roof?

Individual shingles can be replaced. Whether that makes sense depends on the rest of the roof.

Often repairable

When shingle repairs make sense

  • A few missing or damaged shingles
  • Localized wind or impact damage
  • Shingles still flexible and well-granulated
  • A good color match available
May need replacement

When replacement may be better

  • Curling and cracking across many slopes
  • Heavy granule loss throughout
  • Shingles too brittle to lift for repair
  • Multiple layers already on the roof

Factors that affect the decision

The age and type of shingle, how widespread the wear is, whether old shingles can be lifted without breaking, and the condition of the decking and flashing.

When further investigation is needed

Older shingles can become brittle and break when we try to slip new shingles under them. We look at this during the inspection and explain if it limits repair options.

Our Process

How a shingle roof project works

  1. Request

Send the form with photos of the roof, or call or text.

  5. Install

Underlayment, flashing, ventilation and shingles go on per the scope.

  6. Clean up

We clean up nails and debris and review the finished roof with you.

Work depends on weather. Shingles need suitable conditions to seal properly, and we schedule accordingly.

Materials & Options

Shingle styles and key components

A quick guide to the main choices and layers in an asphalt shingle roof.

Three-tab shingles

Flat, single-layer shingles with a uniform pattern. Common on older roofs.

Architectural shingles

Multi-layer laminated shingles with a thicker, dimensional appearance.

Hip & ridge caps

Shingles made or cut to cover hips and ridges, often over a ridge vent.

Starter & underlayment

Starter strips at the edges and underlayment beneath help the shingles shed water.

FAQ

Asphalt shingle FAQs

What is the difference between three-tab and architectural shingles?

Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer with a uniform pattern. Architectural shingles are laminated from multiple layers, so they are thicker and have a more textured, dimensional look.

Can I switch from three-tab to architectural shingles?

Yes, this is common during replacement. The new shingles are installed over properly prepared decking after the old roof is removed.

What roof pitch do asphalt shingles need?

They are designed for sloped roofs. Very low slopes need additional underlayment measures per the manufacturer, and nearly flat areas usually need a membrane roof instead.

Why are there granules in my gutters?

Some granule shedding is normal on new roofs. Heavy or ongoing loss on an older roof can be a sign of wear. An inspection can tell you more.

Can shingles be installed over an existing roof?

In some cases a layover is allowed, but it hides the decking and adds weight. We generally recommend tearing off so the decking can be checked; we explain the tradeoffs.

Why do my shingles look wavy?

Waviness can come from uneven or deflected decking, moisture, or installation issues. It is worth having looked at.

What are the dark streaks on my roof?

Often algae growth on shaded or north-facing slopes. It is mostly cosmetic, but moss that holds moisture can shorten a shingle’s life.

Is the shingle roof estimate free?

Yes. Inspections and estimates are free.
