Planning a gutter system from scratch
Some roofs never had gutters, or only had them on part of the house. Additions, porches, garages and sheds are often left without them. In other cases, an older layout simply does not work, with downspouts in the wrong places or sections that drain toward a walkway or driveway.
Gutter installation starts with a plan. We look at the roof planes, how much water each one sheds, where the gutters can be fastened, and where downspouts can discharge without creating a new problem at the ground. That plan drives the gutter size, the slope of each run and the number of downspouts.
Installation itself involves hanging and pitching the gutters, sealing joints and end caps, cutting in outlets, and connecting and securing the downspouts.
Thinking about the ground, not just the roof
Gutters collect water from a large area and release it at a few points. Where those points land matters. We talk through downspout extensions and discharge locations so water is directed away from foundations and walkways, and we tell you if a site may need drainage work beyond what gutters can do.
Problems gutters help prevent
Without gutters, or with a poorly planned layout, roof water lands wherever it falls.
Splash-back on walls
Water hitting the ground and splashing up onto siding, trim and doors.
Soil erosion
Channels and bare patches forming in beds and lawn along the drip line.
Wet foundations
Water collecting against foundation walls instead of being carried away.
Trim and entry damage
Repeated wetting of door thresholds, porch floors and lower trim.
Icy walkways
In winter, roof water dripping onto paths and steps and freezing there.
Water in the wrong place
Older layouts that send downspout water onto driveways or toward the house.
Extend the existing system or start fresh?
If part of the house already has gutters, the new work may connect to them, or it may be time for a single new system.
When adding to existing gutters can work
- Existing gutters are in good condition
- A reasonable match for size and profile is available
- New area is separate, such as a porch or addition
- Downspout capacity is adequate for the added roof
When a new system may make more sense
- Existing gutters are worn or undersized
- No reasonable match is available
- Downspouts are badly placed throughout
- Fascia or roof-edge work is happening anyway
Factors that affect the decision
The condition of what is already there, how the new and old sections will look together, the roof layout, and your budget.
When further investigation is needed
Some homes have roof edges where standard hung gutters are difficult to attach. We explain any limitations we see during the estimate.

Gutter installation FAQs
Does every house need gutters?
Not every house, but most benefit from them. Gutters matter most where roof water would otherwise land near the foundation, entries or walkways.
How do you decide where downspouts go?
We look at the roof area feeding each gutter, the length of the run, and where water can be released away from the house without causing a problem at the ground.
Can you add gutters to a porch or garage?
Yes, as long as there is a suitable edge to fasten to. We look at each structure during the estimate.
What size gutters do I need?
It depends on roof area, pitch and how much water each run handles. Larger or steeper roofs often need larger gutters or more downspouts.
Are seamless gutters an option?
We can talk through seamless and sectional gutters during the estimate. Our seamless gutters page explains the difference.
Where will the downspout water go?
We plan discharge points with extensions or splash blocks to move water away from the foundation. Sites with low spots or poor grading may need additional drainage work.
Should I add gutter guards at the same time?
You can. Adding guards during installation is straightforward. They reduce debris but do not eliminate maintenance.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. Gutter installation site visits and estimates are free.
