Hardscape and masonry work, from the base up
Pavers, concrete, brick and block make up the hard surfaces and structures around a home: the walkway to the front door, the patio out back, the driveway, the steps at the entry and the walls that hold back soil. They take foot traffic, vehicles, water and New Jersey winters, so the way they are built matters as much as how they look.
Monarch handles new installations and repairs across this category. Some homeowners come to us with a blank backyard and an idea. Others have a walkway that has sunk, steps that have cracked, mortar that is crumbling or pavers that have heaved. In each case the first step is the same: a free site visit to look at the area, how water moves across it and what is causing any problems you are seeing.
From there we explain the options in plain language. Sometimes a targeted repair is enough. Sometimes the base or drainage needs to be corrected before new material goes down. We tell you which, and why.
What ties this work together
Almost every hardscape problem traces back to a few things: excavation, base preparation and compaction, slope and drainage, and how edges and joints are handled. Getting those right is the common thread across every service on this page. Some projects, such as taller retaining walls or work near the street, may also require engineering, permits or inspections depending on the town.

Common hardscape and masonry problems
These are the issues that most often lead New Jersey homeowners to call us about pavers, concrete or masonry.
Sinking and uneven surfaces
Pavers or slabs that have settled, leaving lips, dips and trip hazards.
Water flowing the wrong way
Patios, walks or driveways that pitch toward the house or hold standing water.
Cracked concrete and masonry
Cracks in slabs, steps or walls from movement, freeze-thaw or loads.
Loose or crumbling mortar
Joints in brick and block that have eroded, letting water into the wall.
Leaning walls
Retaining walls that bulge or tilt, often linked to drainage behind the wall.
Weeds and washed-out joints
Joint material lost to rain and cleaning, with weeds filling the gaps.
Fix what you have, or start over?
Plenty of hardscape can be repaired. Some of it cannot be repaired well. Our recommendation depends on the cause.
Conditions that may favor repair
- Problems limited to one section
- Sound base under most of the surface
- Surface wear, stains or loose joints
- Masonry units intact with failing mortar
Conditions that may favor rebuilding
- Settling or heaving across the whole area
- Drainage directed toward the foundation
- Walls leaning or bulging along their length
- Concrete broken into many pieces
Factors that affect the decision
What is causing the problem (base, drainage, edges or age), how much of the area is affected, the condition of the existing material, and how you plan to use the space.
When further investigation is needed
Conditions under a surface or behind a wall are not always visible. If we uncover poor soil, buried debris or hidden water problems, we stop and talk it through before changing the scope.

Pavers and masonry FAQs
Do you handle both new installations and repairs?
Yes. This category covers new patios, walkways, driveways, walls and steps as well as repairs to existing pavers, concrete and masonry.
Pavers or poured concrete: which is better?
Neither is better in every case. Pavers can be lifted and reset in sections; concrete gives a continuous surface. Budget, look, use and site conditions all play a part, and we can talk through both.
Why does hardscape fail?
The most common causes are a thin or poorly compacted base, water collecting underneath or flowing toward the house, and missing edge restraints. The surface material is rarely the root problem.
Will I need a permit?
It depends on the town and the project. Retaining walls above certain heights, driveway aprons and work near the street are common cases where permits, engineering or inspections may be required.
Can you match my existing brick or pavers?
We try to find a close match, but colors and products change over time and weathered material looks different from new. We will be honest about how close a match is likely to be.
Can I send photos first?
Yes. Upload up to five photos with your request. Wide shots plus close-ups of cracks, dips or loose joints help us prepare for the visit.
Do you work on chimney masonry too?
Yes. Chimney brick and mortar work is covered under our chimney services.
Are site visits free?
Yes. Site visits and estimates for pavers and masonry work are free.
