What composite decking is, and what it asks of the installer
Composite decking is made from a blend of materials, commonly wood fibers and plastics, and many products have a protective outer shell. Homeowners choose it because it does not need regular staining or sealing the way wood does, it resists splintering, and it comes in a range of colors and textures.
Composite is not maintenance-free, and it is not installed exactly like wood. Each product line has its own requirements for joist spacing, fastening, gapping, ventilation under the deck and how board ends and edges are finished. Following those instructions matters for appearance, performance and the manufacturer’s warranty terms.
Composite boards are only as good as the framing underneath. Whether you are building new or resurfacing an existing deck, we check that the joists are sound, flat and spaced correctly for the product you choose before any boards go down.
Resurfacing an existing deck
Putting composite boards on an old frame can make sense when the framing is in good condition and spaced appropriately. If it is not, the frame needs repair or replacement first. We tell you which applies after looking underneath.
Composite problems that start with installation
Most complaints about composite decks trace back to how they were installed rather than the boards themselves.
Wrong joist spacing
Boards spanning farther than the product allows can flex or sag between joists.
Uneven framing
Old joists that are crowned or twisted show through as wavy decking.
Gaps that open or close
Boards expand and contract with temperature; incorrect gapping causes buckling or wide gaps.
Poor ventilation
Low decks without airflow underneath can trap moisture against the framing.
Fastener issues
Using the wrong fasteners or method can cause mushrooming, splitting or loose boards.
Water at the framing
Wood joists under composite still need protection where water collects.
How composite compares with wood
Neither is right for every home. These are the general tradeoffs we discuss.
Reasons homeowners choose composite
- No regular staining or sealing
- Resists splintering
- Consistent color and texture
- Hidden fastening options on many products
Reasons homeowners choose wood
- Natural look and feel
- Can be sanded and refinished
- Usually a lower material cost
- Individual boards easy to source and replace
Factors that affect the decision
Budget, appearance, how much maintenance you want to do, how hot the deck surface gets in full sun, and whether the existing framing can be reused.
When further investigation is needed
Surface temperature, color fading and cleaning needs differ between products. We point you to each manufacturer’s published information rather than making promises on their behalf.

Composite decking FAQs
Is composite decking maintenance-free?
No. It does not need staining, but it still needs periodic cleaning to remove dirt, pollen and mildew. Follow the manufacturer’s care guidance for your product.
Which composite brand do you use?
We do not push a particular brand. We review available options with you and install the one you choose according to its instructions.
Can composite go on my existing deck frame?
Sometimes. The frame must be sound, flat and spaced as the product requires. Many older frames need repairs or added joists first.
Why does joist spacing matter so much?
Composite boards are typically more flexible than wood. Each product lists a maximum span, and exceeding it can lead to sagging.
Do composite boards get hot?
Many do in direct sun, and darker colors usually get hotter. Manufacturers publish information on this, which we can help you compare.
What are hidden fasteners?
Clips that hold boards from the side so no screw heads show on the surface. Whether they can be used depends on the board profile.
Does the warranty depend on installation?
Manufacturer warranty terms usually require installation to their instructions. The terms are set by the manufacturer, so review them for the product you select.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. We evaluate the framing or site and provide an estimate at no cost.
