A paver driveway is only as strong as its base. We plan excavation depth, compaction, drainage and edges for the weight of the vehicles that will use it.

Why a paver driveway is built differently
A driveway carries far more weight than a patio or walkway. Cars, SUVs, delivery trucks and the occasional moving van all push down on the surface, and turning tires twist the pavers sideways. A base that works under patio furniture can rut and sink under vehicles.
That is why paver driveways need deeper excavation, a thicker base compacted in layers and pavers suited to vehicle traffic. Strong edge restraints matter too, because turning and braking forces push the outer rows outward.
At the site visit we look at the existing driveway, the soil and how water moves across it, toward the street, the garage or the house. We ask what vehicles use it and whether heavier vehicles regularly come in. Those answers shape the base design and the estimate.
Aprons, curbs and town rules
Where the driveway meets the street, many towns have rules about the apron, curb cuts and sidewalk crossings. Permits or inspections may be required depending on the town and the work. We will tell you what we know applies and what you may need to confirm with your municipality.
Driveway problems a proper base prevents
These are the failures we see most on driveways that were not built for the loads they carry.
Ruts in the wheel paths
Grooves where tires travel, usually from a base too thin for vehicles.
Sinking edges
Outer rows dropping where cars run off the side or edges were not restrained.
Shifting patterns
Pavers creeping and joints opening from turning and braking forces.
Water toward the garage
A driveway pitched toward the garage or house instead of away from it.
Cracked units
Pavers that break under loads they were not designed to carry.
Frost heave
Sections pushed up in winter where water sits in or under the base.
Repair a paver driveway, or rebuild the base?
Driveway repairs only last if the base underneath can carry the load.
When targeted repair may work
- Localized settling from a utility trench
- A few cracked or stained pavers
- One edge that needs restraint
- Base depth adequate elsewhere
When rebuilding may be needed
- Ruts along both wheel paths
- Settling across much of the driveway
- Base clearly too thin for vehicles
- Drainage directed at the garage or house
Factors that affect the decision
The base depth and condition, soil type, drainage, the vehicles using the driveway, and whether you are converting from asphalt or concrete.
When further investigation is needed
Removing an old driveway sometimes reveals soft soil, old fill or buried material. If the subgrade needs extra work, we explain why and discuss it with you before proceeding.

Site visit
We assess soil, drainage, vehicles and the apron area.
Design & estimate
We set base depth, paver type and layout, then provide an estimate.
Remove & excavate
The old surface is removed and the area excavated to depth.
Base & pavers
The base is compacted in layers, then pavers are laid and restrained.
Compact & review
The surface is compacted, joints filled and we review it with you.
Timing depends on size, weather, materials and any permits. We will tell you when the driveway can be used again once it is complete.
Driveway paver components
For driveways, what is under the pavers matters most.
Vehicle-rated pavers
Pavers with the thickness and shape suited to vehicle traffic.
Deep aggregate base
Thicker compacted stone, placed in lifts, to spread loads into the soil.
Edge restraints
Heavy-duty edging that resists the outward push of turning tires.
Joint material
Compacted joint fill that locks the pavers so they act as one surface.

Driveway paver FAQs
How is a driveway base different from a patio base?
It is deeper and compacted in more layers so it can spread vehicle loads into the soil. The exact depth depends on soil and use, which we assess at the site visit.
Can I park a truck or RV on pavers?
Pavers can carry heavier vehicles if the base and pavers are designed for it. Tell us about any heavy vehicles so we can plan accordingly.
Can you install pavers over my old asphalt?
Generally we recommend removing old asphalt so the base can be built and compacted correctly. Pavers laid over a failing surface tend to inherit its problems.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
It depends on your town. Changes to the apron, curb cut, sidewalk or driveway width often require approval. We will tell you what we know and what to check with your municipality.
Will snow plows damage pavers?
Plows and shovels can catch raised edges. A well-compacted, even surface helps, and plastic or rubber-edged blades are gentler. We can share snow removal tips for your driveway.
Why are my driveway pavers rutting?
Ruts in the wheel paths almost always mean the base is too thin or too weak for the loads. Fixing ruts properly usually means rebuilding the base under those areas.
How soon can I drive on a new paver driveway?
Once the pavers are laid, compacted and jointed, the surface is generally ready for use. We will confirm at the final walkthrough.
Is the driveway estimate free?
Yes. Driveway site visits and estimates are free.
