Getting a new opening right from the start
Window installation, as we use the term here, means putting a window where there was none, or into an opening that has been resized or reframed. That is different from window replacement, which swaps a new unit into an existing opening.
Homeowners consider new windows to bring light into a dark room, add an egress option, open up a stairway or match a renovation. Each new opening affects the wall structurally and changes how water moves down the exterior, so the details matter.
We look at the wall, the siding and what is inside the cavity, then discuss window size, style and placement. Cutting a new opening in a wall may require a header and, depending on the town and the project, a permit or inspection. We will tell you what applies, and we do not provide engineering services.
Flashing and weatherproofing
A new window should be flashed in a shingle-lap order: sill protection first, then the window, then the sides and head, so water that gets behind the siding is directed back out. Sealant and insulation close the gaps. Trim and a drip cap finish the opening and help shed water.
Installation mistakes that cause problems later
A new window is only as good as the opening around it. These are the issues good installation helps avoid.
Leaks below the sill
Water that gets under the window with no sill protection to send it back out.
Reverse-lapped flashing
Flashing layered the wrong way, which channels water into the wall instead of out.
Out-of-square installation
A window set without proper shimming that binds, gaps or will not lock.
Air leaks at the perimeter
Unfilled or overfilled gaps between window and framing that let air through.
Undersized headers
Openings framed without the support they need above the window.
Poor siding tie-in
Siding and trim cut back carelessly, leaving gaps that let water behind.
New installation or replacement?
The right approach depends on whether the opening already exists and what condition it is in.
When replacement is usually enough
- The opening is staying the same size
- Framing around the window is sound
- No water damage in the wall
- You are happy with the window’s location
When new installation is involved
- Adding a window where there was none
- Enlarging or reducing an opening
- Framing or header needs rebuilding
- Moving a window to a new position
Factors that affect the decision
The wall construction, what is in the cavity (wiring, plumbing, ductwork), the siding type, structural considerations and local permit requirements.
When further investigation is needed
Opening a wall can reveal wiring, pipes or older damage. We discuss anything unexpected with you before proceeding, and coordinate other trades where needed.
How window installation works
Request
Describe the room and where you would like the window, with photos.
Site visit
We look at the wall, the siding and what may be inside the cavity.
Plan & estimate
We review size, style and the framing involved, and provide an estimate.
Open & frame
The opening is cut and framed, with a header as required.
Flash & set
Sill protection, the window, side and head flashing go in, in that order.
Seal & trim
Gaps are insulated and the exterior is trimmed and sealed.
Timing depends on the window’s lead time, any permits and the weather. We confirm a schedule once the estimate is approved.
Weatherproofing components
These are the materials that keep a new opening dry. Specific products are options we discuss for each job.
Sill protection
A sloped sill pan or flexible flashing that catches water and directs it outward.
Flashing tapes & membranes
Self-adhered materials lapped over the window flanges at the sides and head.
Insulation & sealant
Low-expansion foam or backer rod and sealant that fill the gap without bowing the frame.
Head flashing & trim
A drip cap above the window and trim that ties neatly into the siding.

Window installation FAQs
What is the difference between window installation and replacement?
Installation puts a window into a new or resized opening. Replacement puts a new window into an opening that already exists and is staying the same size.
Do I need a permit to add a window?
Often, because it changes the wall framing. Requirements vary by town and project, and we will tell you what applies before work begins.
Can a window go in any wall?
Not always. Load-bearing walls, wiring, plumbing and ductwork affect placement. Some projects may need an engineer’s input, which we will flag if so.
What is a sill pan?
A sloped tray or flashing at the bottom of the opening that catches any water getting past the window and directs it back outside.
Why does flashing order matter?
Each layer should overlap the one below it, like shingles, so water runs out over the siding. Reversing the order can direct water into the wall.
Will you match my existing siding around the new window?
We aim to tie the new opening neatly into your siding and trim. An exact color match depends on what is available, especially on older siding.
Can I add an egress window?
Egress windows have specific size and height requirements set by code. We can discuss your goals, and permit or inspection requirements will depend on the town.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. The site visit and estimate are free.
