Finding the leak is half the repair
Water rarely drips straight down from where it gets in. It can run along decking, rafters or the top of insulation and show up several feet away from the actual entry point. That is why patching the spot directly above a stain often does not stop a leak.
Leak detection starts with the clues: where the stain is, when it appears (every rain, only in wind-driven rain, or during snowmelt), and what is above it on the roof. We check likely entry points such as flashing, pipe boots, valleys, vents, chimneys and damaged shingles, and look in the attic where it is accessible.
Once we have identified the likely source, we explain it, show you photos where helpful, and recommend a repair. Some leaks have more than one contributing cause, and we tell you if that is what we find.
Active leak right now?
Monarch offers 24/7 emergency roofing service. If water is coming in, call (551) 241-0470. We can discuss temporary protection to limit damage until a permanent repair can be made. Move belongings away from the drip, and avoid areas where the ceiling is sagging.
Signs you may have a roof leak
Some leaks announce themselves. Others stay hidden until damage has spread.
Ceiling or wall stains
Brown or yellow rings, often growing after each rain.
Damp attic insulation
Matted or wet insulation, or water marks on rafters and decking.
Peeling paint indoors
Bubbling or peeling paint near ceilings and exterior walls.
Musty smells
A persistent damp odor in upper rooms or the attic.
Visible flashing gaps
Lifted or rusted flashing, or dried-out sealant at chimneys and walls.
Shingle damage
Missing, cracked or curled shingles that expose the layers beneath.
Is a leak repair enough?
Most leaks can be repaired. Sometimes a leak is a symptom of a roof that is wearing out overall.
When a targeted repair usually works
- One identifiable entry point
- A failed pipe boot or flashing section
- A few damaged or missing shingles
- Roof covering otherwise in serviceable condition
When we may discuss replacement
- Leaks in several unrelated areas
- Widespread brittle or curling shingles
- Soft or rotted decking over a large area
- Repeated repairs that keep failing
Factors that affect the decision
How many entry points there are, the age and condition of the roof covering, the extent of any decking damage, and how long the leak has been active.
When further investigation is needed
Some leaks are intermittent and only show up in certain wind directions or during snowmelt. If the source is not clear on the first visit, we explain what we have ruled out and what the next step is.

Roof leak FAQs
Why does my roof only leak sometimes?
Some leaks only appear with wind-driven rain from a certain direction, heavy downpours, or melting snow and ice. Knowing when it happens helps narrow down the source.
The stain is in the middle of the ceiling. Is the leak right above it?
Not necessarily. Water can travel along rafters and decking before it drips. We trace it back rather than assuming.
Can a leak be caused by something other than the roof?
Yes. Condensation in the attic, plumbing, HVAC lines and ice dams can all look like roof leaks. We tell you if the evidence points elsewhere.
Do you offer emergency leak service?
Yes. Monarch offers 24/7 emergency roofing service. Call (551) 241-0470 if water is actively coming in.
What should I do while I wait?
Move valuables, put a bucket under the drip, and stay away from any sagging ceiling. Please do not go on the roof yourself, especially in wet weather.
Will you repair the interior damage?
Our focus is stopping the water at the roof. We will point out interior damage we notice so you can plan those repairs.
Is a pipe boot really that common a leak source?
Yes. The rubber collars around plumbing vents dry out and crack, letting water run down the pipe into the house.
Is the leak inspection free?
Yes. Leak inspections and estimates are free.
