Service Overview

What soffit and fascia do

The fascia is the vertical board along the edge of the roof. It caps the ends of the rafters and is usually where the gutters are attached. The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Many soffits are vented to let air into the attic.

Because they sit right at the roof edge, soffit and fascia take the brunt of overflowing gutters, ice dams and roof leaks at the eaves. Wood fascia behind a clogged gutter can stay wet for long periods and rot. When that happens, gutter fasteners lose their grip and gutters start to sag or pull away.

Damaged soffits can also let in birds, squirrels and insects, and blocked or missing soffit vents can upset attic ventilation. We look at the boards, the vents, the gutter attachment and the roof edge above, then explain what needs repair.

Where roof, gutters and siding meet

Soffit and fascia problems often have a cause above them, such as a missing drip edge, roof leak or gutter problem. We check the roof edge and gutters as part of the visit. See our roofing and gutter pages for more.

Common Problems

Common soffit and fascia problems

Roof-edge damage often starts with water. These are the problems we see most.

Rotted fascia

Wood fascia soaked by overflowing gutters or roof-edge leaks becomes soft and crumbly.

Sagging or loose gutters

Gutters pulling away because the fascia behind them can no longer hold fasteners.

Blocked or missing vents

Soffit vents painted over, blocked by insulation or never installed, limiting attic airflow.

Animal and pest entry

Holes and gaps where birds, squirrels or insects get into the soffit and attic.

Water stains and peeling

Stained or peeling soffit that points to leaks or ice dams above.

Loose or missing panels

Soffit panels and fascia wrap blown loose by wind, leaving the edge open.

Repair or Replace

Spot repair or a full run of new fascia?

Some roof-edge damage is limited to one corner. Some runs the length of the house.

Spot repair

When a section repair may work

  • Rot limited to a short length
  • Rafter ends behind it solid
  • Gutters otherwise well attached
  • Cause of the water easily fixed
Longer replacement

When replacing longer runs makes sense

  • Rot along much of the fascia
  • Gutters loose along the whole run
  • Soffit damaged or unvented throughout
  • Gutters or roof edge being replaced anyway

Factors that affect the decision

How far the rot extends, the condition of the rafter tails, the state of the gutters and roof edge, your ventilation needs, and any other roofing or gutter work planned.

When further investigation is needed

Rot in fascia can extend into rafter tails and roof decking at the edge. When gutters and fascia come off, we check and explain any additional repair before it is done.

Fascia boards

Wood fascia, often wrapped in aluminum or replaced with moisture-resistant material in problem areas.

Soffit panels

Solid or vented panels in vinyl, aluminum or wood, chosen to suit the house and ventilation needs.

Soffit ventilation

Intake vents that bring air into the attic and work together with exhaust vents near the ridge.

Gutter attachment

FAQ

Soffit and fascia FAQs

What is the difference between soffit and fascia?

Fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge, usually where gutters attach. Soffit is the horizontal underside of the overhang between the fascia and the wall.

Why is my gutter pulling away from the house?

Often because the fascia behind it has rotted and can no longer hold the fasteners. Re-hanging the gutter without fixing the fascia rarely lasts.

Do soffit vents matter?

Yes. Soffit vents provide intake air for many attic ventilation systems. Blocked or missing vents can contribute to heat and moisture problems in the attic.

Can animals get in through the soffit?

Yes. Damaged or gapped soffits are a common entry point for birds, squirrels and insects. Active wildlife may need a removal specialist before repairs.

Should fascia be wrapped in aluminum?

Wrapping can protect sound wood, but wrapping over rotted fascia hides the problem. Damaged boards should be replaced first.

Do you take the gutters down to repair fascia?

Usually, yes, for the section being repaired. We reattach them afterward, or replace them if that is part of the scope.

Can ice dams damage fascia and soffit?

Yes. Water backing up at the eaves can soak fascia and soffit and stain the overhang. We look at the roof edge and ventilation as well.

Is this roofing, siding or gutter work?

It sits where all three meet, which is why we look at the roof edge, gutters and trim together during the inspection.
