Targeted repairs for decks worth keeping
Not every tired deck needs to be torn down. When the footings and main framing are in reasonable shape, repairing the damaged parts can restore a safe, usable surface. Deck repair means finding what has failed, understanding why, and fixing it in a way that does not leave the same problem behind.
Typical repairs include replacing rotted or split decking boards, sistering or replacing damaged joists, adding or replacing joist hangers and fasteners, resetting loose railing posts, rebuilding worn stairs, and correcting trim and fascia that trap water.
Before quoting, we look at the deck from above and below. A soft board is sometimes just a soft board, and sometimes the first sign of a joist or ledger problem underneath. Knowing which one you have makes a big difference to the right repair.
Matching old and new
New boards rarely match weathered ones perfectly at first. We talk through what to expect with color and texture, and whether cleaning and sealing the whole deck afterward makes sense. Structural repairs may need a permit depending on the work and your town; we explain what applies.
Deck problems we repair
These are the issues that most often bring homeowners to us for deck repair.
Soft or rotted boards
Boards that give underfoot, usually from trapped moisture or long-term weathering.
Splintering and splits
Cracked board ends and splinters that make the deck unpleasant or unsafe barefoot.
Popped nails and loose screws
Fasteners that work loose as wood expands, shrinks and moves.
Dips and sags
Low areas caused by damaged joists, missing blocking or failing supports.
Wobbly railings
Posts that have loosened at their connection to the deck framing.
Damaged fascia and trim
Rim boards and trim that hold water against the framing behind them.
When repair is the right call, and when it is not
We would rather fix a deck that can be fixed. We also tell you when repairs would only be throwing good money after bad.
Repair usually makes sense when
- Footings and posts are stable
- Decay is limited to some boards or joists
- The ledger is sound and can be properly flashed
- Railings and stairs can be secured or rebuilt
Replacement may make more sense when
- Decay shows up across much of the framing
- The original framing is undersized or poorly connected
- Posts or footings have failed
- Repair costs approach the cost of a new deck
Factors that affect the decision
The extent and location of the damage, how the deck was built, the condition of the ledger and footings, and how long you expect to keep the deck.
When further investigation is needed
Removing a damaged board sometimes reveals more decay below. If that happens, we show you what we found and agree on any change before continuing.

Deck repair FAQs
Can you replace just a few deck boards?
Yes. Replacing individual boards is common. We check the joists under them first so the new boards are going onto solid framing.
Will new boards match my old deck?
Not exactly at first, since weathered wood and composite change color over time. We discuss options such as cleaning and finishing the whole deck to even out the look.
Do deck repairs need a permit?
Board replacement often does not, but structural repairs to joists, beams, posts or the ledger may. It depends on your town. We tell you what we expect.
Why do my deck screws keep popping up?
Wood moves with moisture and temperature, and some fasteners lose their grip over time. Re-fastening with suitable screws usually solves it if the joists are sound.
Can a rotted joist be repaired?
Sometimes a damaged joist can be reinforced by sistering a new one alongside it; sometimes it needs replacing. It depends on how far the decay goes.
Can you fix a deck that pulls away from the house?
A deck separating from the house is a serious concern. Stay off it and have it inspected. The fix depends on the ledger and house framing, and may involve a permit.
Do you repair composite decks too?
Yes. Composite boards can be replaced, and the framing underneath is usually wood that needs the same attention as any deck.
Is the repair estimate free?
Yes. We look at the deck and provide the estimate at no cost.
