Service Overview

Why it pays to check your gutters before they fail

Gutters are easy to forget until water pours over the edge during a storm. By then, the cause may have been building for a while: a run that has lost its slope, a seam that has opened up, a hanger that has pulled loose, or a downspout that is blocked partway down.

A gutter inspection looks at the whole path water takes from the roof edge to the ground. We check whether the gutters are pitched toward the outlets, whether joints and end caps are sealed, how securely the system is fastened, and where the downspouts discharge.

Homeowners usually ask for an inspection when they see overflow, dripping seams, sagging sections, staining on siding, or puddles near the foundation. It is also a sensible step when buying a home or after a season of heavy leaf fall.

Looking behind the gutter, too

Gutters hang on the fascia board at the roof edge. When water gets behind a gutter, the fascia can soften and the fasteners can loosen. Where we can see it, we check the fascia and the roof edge as well. Concealed rot may only be confirmed once a gutter is taken down, and we tell you when that is the case.

Common Problems

What gutter inspections often find

Most of these start small. Catching them early usually keeps the fix simple.

Lost pitch

Sections that have settled flat or tilt the wrong way, leaving standing water in the trough.

Leaking seams

Joints, corners and end caps where sealant has failed and water drips through.

Loose hangers

Fasteners backing out of the fascia, so the gutter pulls away from the house.

Hidden blockages

Leaves and debris packed into outlets or the elbows of downspouts.

Fascia concerns

Soft, stained or swollen wood behind the gutter from long-term moisture.

Poor discharge

Downspouts that empty right next to the foundation or onto walkways.

After the Inspection

Clean, repair, replace or leave it alone

What we recommend depends on what we find, not on what we would like to sell.

Often a simple fix

Findings that usually call for cleaning or repair

  • Debris in the trough or outlets
  • A few leaking seams or end caps
  • Isolated loose hangers
  • A downspout that needs re-securing or an extension
May need replacement

Findings that may point to new gutters

  • Rust, splits or holes along long runs
  • Repeated sagging despite re-fastening
  • Gutters undersized for the roof area they drain
  • Fascia damage that requires taking the gutters down anyway

Factors that affect the decision

The gutter material and its condition, how much of the system is affected, the condition of the fascia behind it, and whether other roof-edge work is planned.

When further investigation is needed

Some drainage problems only show themselves during heavy rain. If the cause is not obvious on a dry day, we explain what to watch for, or what a closer look would involve.

Materials & Options

Parts of a gutter system we look at

A gutter system is more than the trough you see from the yard.

Gutter runs

The trough itself: its material, condition, slope and how the sections are joined.

Hangers & fasteners

The hardware that holds the gutter to the fascia and keeps it from sagging under load.

Outlets & downspouts

Where water leaves the gutter and travels down the wall, including elbows and straps.

Fascia & roof edge

The board the gutter is fastened to, and how roof runoff enters the gutter.

FAQ

Gutter inspection FAQs

Is a gutter inspection free?

Yes. We do not charge for gutter inspections or estimates.

How often should gutters be checked?

Many homeowners have them looked at once or twice a year, often after the leaves are down in the fall. Homes under heavy tree cover may need attention more often.

Can you inspect gutters without going on the roof?

Usually, yes. Most of a gutter check is done from the ground and from a ladder. We only go onto the roof when it is safe and it helps answer a specific question.

Why is water spilling over the front of my gutter?

Common causes are a clog at the outlet, a section that has lost its slope, or a gutter that is too small for the volume of water it receives. An inspection helps pin down which one it is.

Will you check the fascia board?

We look at the fascia where it is visible. If there are signs of rot behind the gutter, we explain that the full extent may only be clear once the gutter is removed.

Do you check the downspouts too?

Yes. We look at how they are connected and secured and where they release water. Blockages inside buried drain lines are a different matter, and we tell you if one seems likely.

Should I have my gutters inspected before buying a house?

It can be useful. A gutter check gives you a picture of the drainage at the roof edge, which a general home inspection may only touch on briefly.

Can I send photos first?

Yes. You can attach up to five photos to your request. Please take them from the ground or a window rather than climbing a ladder.
