Service Overview

Clean gutters move water where it belongs

Every gutter collects debris. Leaves, pine needles, seed pods, shingle granules and dirt settle in the trough and gradually pack into the outlets. Once that happens, water backs up, spills over the edge and lands right next to the house.

Gutter cleaning removes that buildup by hand from the troughs, clears the outlets, and checks that water runs freely through the downspouts. When a downspout is blocked, we work to clear it so the system drains from top to bottom, not just at the top.

Many New Jersey homeowners schedule cleaning in late fall once most leaves have dropped, and some add a spring visit to deal with seeds and blossoms. Homes surrounded by mature trees often need more frequent attention.

What cleaning can and cannot fix

Cleaning solves problems caused by debris. It will not fix a gutter that has lost its slope, a seam that leaks, loose hangers, or a downspout that empties against the foundation. If water is still misbehaving after a cleaning, the cause is likely something else, and we tell you what we saw so you can decide whether it is worth addressing.

Common Problems

Signs your gutters need cleaning

If you notice any of these, a clog is a likely cause, though not the only possible one.

Water spilling over the edge

Overflow along a run during rain, especially near corners and outlets.

Visible plants or debris

Leaves sticking up above the gutter, or seedlings growing in the trough.

Quiet downspouts

Little or no water coming out of a downspout during a steady rain.

Sagging under weight

Wet debris is heavy and can pull a gutter down between hangers.

Staining below the gutter

Streaks on siding or trim where water has been running over the side.

Ice at the roof edge

In winter, water trapped in clogged gutters can freeze and build up at the eaves.

Beyond Cleaning

When cleaning is enough, and when it is not

A cleaning often solves the problem. Sometimes it reveals a different one.

Cleaning usually helps

Problems that often go away after cleaning

  • Overflow caused by a packed outlet
  • Downspouts blocked with leaves
  • Standing water from debris dams
  • Weeds or seedlings growing in the trough
Needs more than cleaning

Problems cleaning will not fix

  • Gutters that slope away from the outlet
  • Leaks at seams, corners or end caps
  • Hangers pulling out of the fascia
  • Water pooling at the foundation from short downspouts

Factors that affect the decision

How much debris your trees drop, how the roof sheds water into the gutters, the condition of the gutters themselves, and where the downspouts discharge.

When further investigation is needed

Drainage problems at grade, such as low spots, negative slope toward the house or failed underground lines, are separate from the gutters. We will tell you if we think that is part of the picture.

Materials & Options

Where debris collects

Knowing where clogs form helps explain why a quick rinse from the ground is rarely enough.

Troughs

Flat stretches of gutter where leaves settle and break down into a heavy sludge.

Outlets

The opening into the downspout, often the first place a clog forms.

Elbows

Bends at the top and bottom of a downspout where debris tends to lodge.

Inside corners

Where two roof planes meet, water and debris arrive together in a hurry.

FAQ

Gutter cleaning FAQs

How often should I have my gutters cleaned?

At least once a year is common, usually in late fall. Homes near oaks, maples or pines often benefit from a second visit in spring or early summer.

Do you clean the downspouts too?

Yes. We check that water runs through each downspout and work to clear blockages. A downspout that feeds an underground line may have a clog below grade that needs a different approach.

Will cleaning stop water from getting in my basement?

It may help if overflowing gutters are dumping water at the foundation. Basement water can also come from grading, groundwater or other sources, so cleaning alone is not a guaranteed fix.

What happens to the debris?

We collect it rather than leaving it on your lawn or beds. If you would like it handled a particular way, let us know when you book.

Can you tell me if my gutters need repair while you are there?

Yes. Because we are working at the gutter line, we often notice leaks, loose hangers or sagging. We point those out and you decide whether to address them.

Do I need to be home?

Not always, as long as we can reach all sides of the house safely. Let us know about gates, pets or parking when you book.

Should I clean my own gutters?

Ladder work is a common cause of household injuries. If you are not comfortable working at height, it is safer to have it done.

Can gutter guards replace cleaning?

Guards can reduce how much debris gets in, but they do not eliminate maintenance. See our gutter guards page for more on that.
