Pavers that look good and stay put
Pavers are individual units, usually concrete or natural stone, laid over a prepared base. Their appearance gets the attention, but what is under them decides how they perform. Most paver problems, such as settling, shifting and puddling, trace back to poor excavation, a thin or uncompacted base, missing edge restraints or poor drainage.
Homeowners choose pavers for patios, walkways, front entries, pool surrounds and driveways. Because individual units can be lifted and reset, pavers can also be easier to repair than a single concrete slab.
Every installation starts with a site visit. We look at how water moves across the area, where the pavers meet the house, lawn and other surfaces, and how the space will be used. Then we discuss layout, materials and the base the project needs.
Built for New Jersey conditions
Freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rain are hard on outdoor surfaces. Base depth, compaction and slope away from the house all matter for how a paver surface holds up over the seasons.
Problems a good installation helps prevent
These are the most common issues we see with paver surfaces that were not built on a proper foundation.
Uneven surfaces
High and low spots that create trip hazards and look untidy.
Settlement
Areas that sink over time, often from a thin or poorly compacted base.
Drainage problems
Standing water or runoff toward the house from incorrect slope.
Broken pavers
Cracked units from heavy loads, impact or movement underneath.
Shifting and spreading
Pavers that creep apart at the edges without proper restraints.
Weeds in the joints
Joint material washing out and leaving room for weeds to grow.
Repair an existing paver surface or start fresh?
If you already have pavers, they may not need to be replaced. Here is how we think about it.
Conditions that may favor repair
- Small areas of settling or heaving
- A few broken or stained pavers
- Joint sand washed out
- Base sound across most of the area
Conditions that may favor a rebuild
- Widespread settling or rutting
- Drainage running toward the house
- Missing edge restraints along long runs
- A base that was never built correctly
Factors that affect the decision
The size of the area, the cause of the problem (base, drainage or edges), the condition of the existing pavers, and how you plan to use the space.
When further investigation is needed
Soft soil, buried debris or drainage issues sometimes only show up during excavation. If we find something unexpected, we stop and discuss it with you before changing the scope.

Project timing depends on size, weather and material availability. We confirm a schedule when you approve the estimate.
Paver materials and base components
Material choice is about looks and use. The base is about performance. Both matter.
Concrete pavers
Wide range of shapes, colors and textures for patios, walkways and driveways.
Natural stone
Bluestone, granite and other stone for a classic, natural appearance.
Base preparation
Compacted aggregate base and bedding layer sized for foot or vehicle traffic.

Paver installation FAQs
How deep does the base need to be?
It depends on soil conditions and use. A driveway that carries vehicles needs a deeper, stronger base than a garden walkway. We set the base for your project during the site visit.
Why do some paver patios sink over time?
Usually because the base was too thin, not compacted in layers, or water is collecting underneath. Proper excavation, compaction and drainage help prevent it.
Can pavers be installed over existing concrete?
Sometimes, but it depends on the concrete’s condition, height and drainage. Often removing the old slab and building a proper base is the better option. We explain the tradeoffs.
How do you handle drainage?
We slope the surface so water runs away from the house and plan where runoff will go. Some sites need additional drainage measures, which we discuss before work begins.
What are edge restraints and why do they matter?
Edge restraints hold the outer pavers in place so the field does not spread or shift. Without them, pavers tend to move at the edges.
Do pavers need maintenance?
Occasional sweeping, topping up joint material and dealing with weeds or stains keeps them looking good. Sealing is optional and depends on the material.
Do I need a permit?
Requirements vary by town and project. Larger projects, driveways near the street, and retaining walls above certain heights may need permits or engineering. We will tell you what applies.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. Paver site visits and estimates are free.
