A gutter is only as secure as what it is fastened to
Most gutters hang on the fascia, the board that runs along the roof edge. Every hanger and fastener depends on that wood being solid. When water gets behind a gutter, from overflow, a missing drip edge or a leaking seam, the fascia can slowly soften and rot. Fasteners lose their grip, and the gutter starts to sag or pull away.
Re-tightening or adding hangers to a soft board rarely lasts. The lasting fix is to repair or replace the damaged sections of fascia, then re-hang the gutter with fresh fasteners into solid wood.
Fascia and gutter attachment repair usually means taking the gutter down along the affected section, removing the damaged wood, installing new fascia, addressing any obvious cause such as a missing drip edge where it is part of the agreed scope, and re-hanging the gutter with proper slope.
What we may find behind the board
Rot sometimes extends beyond the fascia into rafter tails or roof decking at the edge. That can only be confirmed once the fascia is removed. If we find more damage than expected, we stop, show you, and discuss it before changing the scope.
Signs of fascia and attachment problems
These often show up together, because one tends to cause the other.
Gutters pulling away
A visible gap between the gutter and the house along part of the run.
Sagging sections
Gutters dipping where hangers have lost their grip in soft wood.
Soft or rotted fascia
Wood that is spongy, cracked or crumbling at the roof edge.
Peeling paint
Paint blistering or flaking on the fascia, often a sign of moisture behind it.
Water behind the gutter
Streaks on the fascia or soffit below where water runs behind instead of in.
Fasteners backing out
Spikes or screws working loose and sticking out of the gutter face.
Spot repair or longer fascia replacement?
How much wood needs replacing depends on how far the damage has spread.
When a section repair may be enough
- Rot limited to a short length
- Sound wood on either side
- Gutters in good condition otherwise
- A clear, fixable cause such as one leaking seam
When longer fascia replacement may make sense
- Rot along much of the roof edge
- Several areas failing at once
- Gutters being replaced anyway
- Damage extending into rafter tails or decking
Factors that affect the decision
How far the rot extends, what caused it, the condition of the gutters, and whether gutter replacement or other roof-edge work is planned.
When further investigation is needed
Structural damage to rafters or framing beyond the fascia may need a different scope of work. If we see signs of that, we explain what further evaluation may be required.

Fascia and gutter attachment FAQs
Why do gutters pull away from the house?
The most common reasons are failed hangers, the weight of debris or ice, and fascia that has softened so fasteners no longer hold.
Can you just re-nail the gutter?
If the fascia is solid, re-fastening with proper hangers may be enough. If the wood is soft, new fasteners will loosen again, so the fascia needs attention first.
What causes fascia rot?
Water getting behind the gutter is the usual culprit: overflow from clogs, leaking seams, or roof water running behind the gutter where there is no drip edge.
Do you replace the whole fascia or just the bad part?
Usually just the damaged sections, as long as the surrounding wood is sound. If rot is widespread, a longer replacement may make more sense.
Will my gutters be reused?
If they are in good condition, they can usually be re-hung. If they are damaged or worn, we may suggest replacing them while they are down.
What if the rafters are damaged too?
We stop and show you before going further. Damage to rafter tails or decking changes the scope, and we discuss options and any further evaluation that may be needed.
Is fascia repair a roofing job or a gutter job?
It sits between the two. Because it usually comes up when gutters sag or pull away, we handle it alongside the gutter work.
Is the inspection free?
Yes. Fascia and gutter attachment inspections and estimates are free.
