Service Overview

Where chimney leaks really come from

A stain beside the chimney tells you water is getting in. It does not tell you how. Chimney leaks can come through the flashing at the roofline, a cracked crown, porous or cracked masonry, open mortar joints, or a missing cap. Sometimes the cause is the roof next to the chimney rather than the chimney itself.

That is why we start by tracing the water. We look at the chimney from the roof when it is safe, the flashing on every side, the crown and cap, the masonry and the shingles around it, and the interior stain and attic where accessible.

Once we have identified the likely entry path, we explain it, show you photos where helpful, and recommend a repair aimed at that source. If more than one path is involved, we explain each one and which matters most.

Why patching often fails

Many chimney leaks have been “fixed” with layers of roofing cement or caulk. If the actual entry point is a cracked crown or open joints higher up, sealing the flashing will not stop the water. Identifying the real path first saves repeated repairs and the frustration of a leak that keeps coming back.

Common Problems

Common chimney leak sources

These are the entry paths we find most often when tracing chimney leaks.

Failed flashing

Gaps, rust or lifted metal where the chimney meets the roof.

Cracked crown

Water entering at the top and working down through the masonry.

Open mortar joints

Eroded joints that let rain soak into the chimney walls.

Missing cap

Rain falling straight down an open flue.

Porous or spalled brick

Damaged masonry absorbing more water than it can shed.

Roof next to the chimney

Damaged shingles or underlayment near the chimney that look like a chimney leak.

Repair Options

Targeted repair or larger fix?

Once the source is identified, the repair can be scaled to the problem.

Targeted repair

When a focused repair is often enough

  • A single, clearly identified entry point
  • Flashing failure with sound masonry
  • Missing or damaged cap
  • Localized open joints
Larger repair

When more extensive work may be needed

  • Several entry points at once
  • Crown and masonry both deteriorated
  • Long-term water damage to the brick
  • Leaks returning after past repairs

Factors that affect the decision

How many entry paths there are, the condition of the flashing, crown and masonry, interior damage, and whether roof work is planned.

When further investigation is needed

Water can travel along framing or the roof deck before it shows inside, so the stain is not always directly beneath the entry point. Some leaks need a repair-in-progress evaluation to confirm the exact path. If interior framing or finishes are damaged, we point that out.

FAQ

Chimney leak FAQs

How do you find where a chimney leak is coming from?

We inspect every likely entry point (flashing, crown, cap, masonry and the roof around the chimney) and compare that with where the water shows up inside.

Is it always the flashing?

No. Flashing is common, but cracked crowns, open mortar joints, porous brick, missing caps and nearby roof damage can all cause leaks at the chimney.

Why does my chimney only leak in heavy storms?

Wind-driven and sustained rain can reach gaps that light rain does not. That pattern often points to flashing or masonry issues.

Can you stop the leak with sealant?

Sealant may be part of some repairs, but it rarely fixes the actual cause on its own. We aim to repair the entry point properly.

What if water is coming in right now?

Call us at (551) 241-0470. Monarch offers 24/7 emergency roofing service, and a leak at the chimney is often a roof-level problem we can help stabilize.

Will my ceiling need repair afterward?

Possibly, depending on how long water has been coming in. We point out interior damage we see so you can plan for it.

Could the leak be from inside the flue?

Rain entering an uncapped flue can show up at a fireplace. Internal flue or fireplace issues should be checked by a qualified chimney safety professional.

Is the leak inspection free?

Yes. Leak inspections and estimates are free.
