Planning a paver patio that works
A patio is usually the centerpiece of a backyard: a place to eat, sit around a fire pit or simply step out of the back door onto something better than grass. Pavers are a popular choice because they come in many shapes and colors, can be laid in different patterns, and can be lifted and reset if a section ever needs repair.
Good patios start with planning. How many people will use it? Where will the table and chairs go? Is there a grill, a fire pit or a path to the lawn? A patio that is too small feels cramped; one in the wrong spot does not get used.
Then there is the practical side. Patios next to the house need to slope away from the foundation. We look at where water from the roof and yard goes today, and where it will go once the patio is in. We also check door thresholds, so the finished surface sits at a sensible height below them.
Patterns, borders and transitions
Borders, soldier courses and pattern changes help define the space and give the edges a finished look. Where the patio meets lawn, planting beds or an existing walkway, we plan those transitions so they look intentional and stay put.
Patio problems good planning avoids
These are issues we often see on existing patios. Most of them are decided before the first paver is laid.
Water toward the house
A patio pitched the wrong way can send water to the foundation and basement.
Door threshold conflicts
A finished surface too close to the door sill invites water in.
Low spots and settling
Areas that sink because the base was thin or not compacted in layers.
Undersized layout
A patio too small for a table and chairs, or awkward to move around.
Loose borders
Edge courses that drift into the lawn without proper restraints.
Poor drainage at the low edge
Runoff that pools where the patio meets the lawn or beds.
Already have a patio? Repair, extend or replace
An older patio is not automatically a tear-out. Here is how we look at it.
When an existing patio may be worth keeping
- Settling limited to a few areas
- Slope generally away from the house
- Pavers in reusable condition
- Space works, just needs an extension
When replacement may make more sense
- Patio pitched toward the foundation
- Widespread sinking or heaving
- Cracked old concrete under the pavers
- Layout that no longer fits how you live
Factors that affect the decision
The condition of the base, the drainage pattern, whether the pavers can be reused and whether you want to change the size or shape.
When further investigation is needed
Old patios sometimes hide surprises such as buried concrete, debris or soft fill. If excavation reveals something like that, we discuss it with you before adjusting the plan.

Patio paver FAQs
How big should my patio be?
It depends on what you want to do there. We usually start with the furniture, grill or fire pit you plan to use and leave room to walk around them comfortably.
How much slope does a patio need?
Enough to move water off the surface and away from the house without feeling tilted. We set the pitch based on the site during layout.
Can a patio go right up against the house?
Yes, as long as it slopes away from the foundation and the finished height leaves enough room below door thresholds and siding.
Can you include a fire pit or seating wall?
We can discuss features like seating walls and fire pit areas as part of the design. See our outdoor living areas page for more.
Pavers or concrete for a patio?
Pavers offer more pattern choices and can be repaired in sections; a concrete patio gives a continuous surface. We can price both if you are undecided.
Can you extend my existing patio?
Often, yes. Matching older pavers can be tricky, so sometimes a contrasting border or a separate zone looks better than an exact extension.
What happens to the grass and soil you dig out?
Excavated material is hauled away or reused for grading where appropriate. We cover this in the estimate.
Is the patio estimate free?
Yes. Patio site visits and estimates are free.
