Walkways people can walk on comfortably
A walkway gets used every day, in every season and by everyone who visits your home, including guests, delivery drivers, older relatives and anyone pushing a stroller or rolling a trash bin. That makes comfort and safety as important as appearance.
Pavers are well suited to walkways. They can follow curves, step down gradually on a sloped lot and tie in with a patio or driveway. Because units can be lifted, utility work or root problems can be repaired without breaking up the whole path.
We start with how the walk will be used: from the driveway to the front door, from the back door to the yard, or along the side of the house. Then we look at width, grade changes and where water collects, so the walkway drains instead of turning into a puddle or ice patch in winter.
Accessibility, slope and transitions
Gentle slopes are easier to walk than steps for many people. Where the grade is steep, we discuss options such as a longer route, landings or masonry steps. We also pay close attention to transitions where the walkway meets a driveway, stoop or threshold, since small height differences there are a common trip hazard.
Walkway problems we see
Walkways fail in predictable ways. Most of these are trip hazards as well as eyesores.
Lips and trip edges
Pavers that have settled or lifted, leaving raised edges along the path.
Abrupt transitions
Height differences where the walk meets the driveway, stoop or door.
Puddles and ice
Low spots that hold water, which can freeze into slick patches in winter.
Narrow or crowded paths
Walks too tight for two people or for carrying things side by side.
Roots and weeds
Tree roots lifting pavers and weeds filling open joints.
Steep sections
Walks that run straight down a slope without landings or steps.
Fix the walkway you have, or reroute it?
Sometimes a walkway just needs resetting. Sometimes the route itself is the problem.
When repair usually makes sense
- A few settled or lifted pavers
- One awkward transition
- Joint sand washed out
- Route and width still work for you
When a new walkway may be better
- Slope too steep for comfortable walking
- Width too narrow for daily use
- Settling along most of the length
- Old concrete or brick breaking apart
Factors that affect the decision
How the walkway is used, the grade of the lot, the condition of the base and pavers, and how it connects to steps, driveways and doors.
When further investigation is needed
Walkways near foundations, trees and utility lines can reveal roots, buried pipes or soft fill once excavated. We discuss anything unexpected before changing the plan.
How a walkway project works
Request
Send photos of the area and where you want the walk to go.
Walk the route
We look at slope, width, drainage and every transition point.
Plan & estimate
We suggest a layout and materials, then provide an estimate.
Excavate & base
We excavate, set the grade and compact the base.
Lay & edge
Pavers are laid, cuts made at curves, edges restrained and joints filled.
Check transitions
We check every joint with steps, driveway and doors and walk it with you.
Timing depends on the length of the walkway, weather and materials. We confirm the schedule once the estimate is approved.
Walkway materials
Walkways need a surface that is comfortable underfoot and stays even.
Concrete pavers
A wide range of colors and shapes, including tumbled and smooth finishes.
Brick-style pavers
A traditional look for front walks and garden paths.
Natural stone
Bluestone and other stone for a classic walkway or stepping path.
Base & edging
A compacted base sized for foot traffic and edging that keeps the sides straight.

Walkway paver FAQs
How wide should a front walkway be?
Wide enough to walk comfortably and carry things to the door. Many homeowners find a walk that fits two people side by side feels much better than a narrow path. We look at the space and suggest a width during the visit.
What if my front yard slopes?
A gentle slope can be handled with a gradual walk. Steeper grades may call for a longer, curved route, landings or steps. We explain the options and how each will feel to walk.
Can you make a walkway easier for an older relative?
We can plan for gentler slopes, fewer steps and smooth transitions. If you need railings or a specific accessibility standard, tell us so we can discuss what is involved; permits may apply.
Why is there a bump where my walk meets the driveway?
Usually one surface has settled or heaved more than the other. Fixing it typically means resetting the walk edge, and sometimes looking at the base under both.
Can pavers be slippery?
Texture varies by product. Smooth, polished surfaces can be slicker when wet or icy than textured ones. We can show you options with more grip.
Can I use ice melt on pavers?
Many pavers tolerate ice melt, but some products can be harsh on certain materials. Check the paver manufacturer’s guidance or ask us about your specific pavers.
Can a new walkway connect to my existing patio?
Yes. We plan the transition so heights line up and the materials work together, even if they are not identical.
Is the walkway estimate free?
Yes. Walkway site visits and estimates are free.
