Service Overview

Trim does more than frame the view

Exterior trim is the finish around each window and door: side casings, head trim, sills and, on doors, brickmold. It covers the joint between the unit and the siding, and it is designed to shed water away from that joint. When trim rots, cracks or pulls away, water has an easy path into the wall.

Trim usually fails at predictable spots: the bottom ends of casings, the outer corners of sills, and anywhere paint has worn thin and water sits. Wood trim that stays wet for long periods eventually softens and decays. Missing or poorly installed drip caps above windows and doors add to the problem.

We assess the trim and what is behind it. Sometimes a section can be repaired or replaced on its own. Other times the trim is the visible sign of a bigger issue at the window or door, and we explain that honestly.

Repairing trim vs. replacing it

Localized rot can often be cut out and replaced with a matching piece. When rot is widespread, or the trim profile is part of a larger update, full replacement in wood, PVC or composite may make more sense.

Common Problems

Exterior trim problems we see

Signs your window or door trim is letting water in, or about to.

Rotted casing ends

Soft wood at the bottom of side casings where water collects on the sill.

Split sills

Cracks along the sill that let water soak into the wood and the wall below.

Gaps at the siding

Trim pulling away from the siding, or caulk joints that have opened.

Missing drip caps

No flashing above the head trim to kick water out over the casing.

Peeling paint

Paint failing on trim, often an early sign that moisture is getting in.

Moss and mildew

Growth on shaded trim that stays damp, speeding up decay.

Repair or Replace

Patch the trim or replace it?

We look at how far the damage goes and why it happened.

Often repairable

When repair is usually enough

  • Rot limited to the ends of one or two pieces
  • Sound wood behind peeling paint
  • Open caulk joints with trim intact
  • A missing drip cap on otherwise good trim
May need replacement

When full replacement may make sense

  • Rot through most of the trim around an opening
  • Several openings with the same failures
  • Trim being replaced with new windows or siding
  • A different material or profile is wanted

Factors that affect the decision

How widespread the rot is, whether the window or door behind the trim is leaking, the trim material and profile, and any other exterior work planned.

When further investigation is needed

Rot in trim can extend into the window frame, sheathing or framing behind it. We check when the trim is removed and discuss any additional repairs with you before going further.

Our Process

How trim repair and replacement works

  1. Request

Send close-up photos of the damaged trim, plus a wider shot of the wall.

  2. Assess

We probe the trim and check the window or door and sheathing behind it.

  3. Plan

We recommend repair, partial replacement or full replacement and the material to use.

  4. Estimate

You get a written estimate to review.

  5. Repair

Damaged trim is removed, the opening checked, and new trim and flashing installed.

  6. Seal & finish

Joints are sealed and the trim primed or finished as agreed.

Matching older trim profiles can take extra time. We confirm timing when you approve the estimate.

Materials & Options

Exterior trim materials

General information on common trim options. We discuss which fits your home.

Wood trim

Traditional and easy to shape and paint. It needs regular painting and good detailing to resist rot.

PVC trim

Cellular PVC resists moisture and rot. It expands and contracts with temperature, which affects how joints are detailed.

Composite trim

Engineered products that combine wood fibers and resins, with different handling and finishing needs.

Flashing & sealant

Drip caps, sill flashing and exterior sealants that keep water out of the joints.

FAQ

Window and door trim FAQs

Why does trim rot at the bottom first?

Water runs down the casing and sits on the sill, and the cut end grain at the bottom of the casing soaks it up. That is why ends and sills usually fail first.

Can you match my existing trim profile?

We try to match size and profile closely. Some older or custom profiles are harder to source and may need a close substitute or custom work.

Is PVC trim better than wood?

PVC resists rot and moisture, which suits trouble spots like sills. Wood is traditional and easy to paint. Each has trade-offs we can discuss.

What is brickmold?

Brickmold is the exterior trim attached around a door or window frame. On doors it is often part of the prehung unit and covers the gap to the siding or brick.

Do you paint the trim?

Trim can be installed primed, prefinished or painted depending on the material. We confirm finishing in the estimate.

Does rotted trim mean my window is bad?

Not always. Sometimes only the trim has failed. Other times the window is leaking behind it. We check before recommending anything.

Can trim be replaced without replacing the siding?

Usually. Some siding has to be carefully removed and reinstalled at the edges, and we plan that as part of the job.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. We look at the trim and give you a free estimate.
