Carpentry that has to stand up to weather
Exterior carpentry is the wood work that holds a home’s outer layers together: the boards behind gutters, the framing at rakes and eaves, window and door sills, blocking for fixtures, and the many small pieces that siding and trim attach to. Unlike interior carpentry, every cut and joint is exposed to rain, sun and freeze-thaw cycles.
We are often called for jobs that do not fit neatly into one trade: a broken rake board, a sill that needs rebuilding before a door goes back in, framing that needs to be added before new trim can be installed, or blocking for a light, railing or bracket.
Before we cut anything, we look at how water reaches the area. A new board installed the same way as the old one will often fail the same way. Good exterior carpentry is about details like drip edges, end-grain sealing, gaps for drainage and proper fasteners.
Where carpentry meets other trades
Carpentry is often the first step before siding, roofing, gutter or window work. When the wood underneath is sound, the materials installed over it have a better chance of performing well.
Carpentry problems we see on NJ homes
These issues often show up where wood meets roofing, siding or masonry.
Broken rake boards
Split or sagging boards along the gable edge, often from age or wind.
Failed sills
Window and door sills that have absorbed water and lost their shape.
Open joints
Gaps at miters and butt joints that let water into end grain.
Missing blocking
Fixtures and brackets fastened to siding instead of solid backing.
Uneven roof edges
Sub-fascia or rafter tails out of line, making gutters hard to hang level.
Wood in contact with soil
Lower boards that stay wet from mulch, grade or splash-back.
Patch the wood or rebuild the detail?
Sometimes a single piece can be replaced. Sometimes the whole detail needs to be built differently.
When replacing a piece usually works
- One board damaged by impact
- Original detail sheds water well
- Adjacent framing solid
- Standard profile easy to match
When the detail itself may need to change
- The same board has failed before
- Water is trapped by the way pieces meet
- Several connected parts are deteriorated
- The detail does not suit new siding or trim
Factors that affect the decision
How water reaches the area, the condition of surrounding framing, matching the existing look, and whether other exterior work is planned.
When further investigation is needed
Damage behind siding, trim or roofing is not always visible. If removing a board reveals more, we document it with photos and discuss it with you first.

Materials for exterior carpentry
Options we can discuss, chosen by exposure and how the piece will be finished.
Primed or treated lumber
Common for framing, blocking and painted trim. Treated lumber is often used near masonry or the ground.
PVC boards
Resist moisture and are often chosen for sills, lower trim and other wet locations.
Fasteners
Corrosion-resistant nails and screws suited to the material and exposure.
Primers & sealants
Sealing cut ends and joints helps slow water absorption.

Exterior carpentry FAQs
Do you take on small carpentry jobs?
Yes. A single rake board or sill is a common request. Small jobs can also be combined with other exterior work to make one visit go further.
Can you match old trim profiles?
Often, but not always with off-the-shelf stock. On older homes some profiles may need to be built up from several pieces. We explain the options during the visit.
Should I use wood or PVC?
Each has tradeoffs. Wood is traditional and paints well; PVC handles moisture better in wet spots. Many homes use both, depending on location.
Do you paint the new wood?
We prime and seal as needed. Finish painting can be included or left to you; we confirm it in the estimate.
Why did my previous repair fail so quickly?
Usually because the water source was not addressed, joints were left open, or the wrong material was used in a wet spot. We look for those causes first.
Can you add blocking for a new light or bracket?
Yes. Solid backing behind fixtures helps them stay secure and avoids fastening only into siding.
Is exterior carpentry done before or after siding?
Before, when possible. Framing and backing work is easier and better done while the wall is open.
