Service Overview

New trim that looks right and works right

Exterior trim frames the home: casing around windows and doors, corner boards, band and frieze boards, water tables and rake trim. It defines the style of the house, and it also covers the joints where siding meets openings and corners, which makes it part of the water management of the wall.

This page is about installing new trim: during a siding project, after new windows or doors, when upgrading to a different material, or when adding trim details that were never there. If your existing trim just needs a few damaged pieces fixed, see exterior trim repair.

Good trim installation starts with planning: how trim will meet siding, how window and door heads are flashed, how joints are made so they do not open up, and how fasteners and sealants are chosen for the material.

Trim alongside windows and siding

New trim is often installed with window replacement or new siding. Doing it together lets flashing, trim and siding be layered in the right order.

Common Problems

Why homeowners install new trim

New trim solves practical problems as well as looks.

New windows or doors

Fresh openings that need casing and flashing to finish them properly.

New siding

Siding projects that call for matching corner boards and casing.

Worn-out trim

Old trim that has been patched and painted too many times.

Water at openings

Missing head flashing or poor joints letting water behind trim.

Dated or plain exterior

Adding wider casing, band boards or frieze to change the look.

High upkeep

Switching to lower-maintenance materials to reduce painting.

Repair or New Install

Repair existing trim or install new?

Both are valid. It comes down to condition, plans and appearance.

Repair

When repairing existing trim fits

  • Only a few pieces damaged
  • Profiles you want to keep
  • No siding or window work planned
  • Underlying wall in good condition
New installation

When new trim makes more sense

  • New siding, windows or doors going in
  • Trim deteriorated around much of the house
  • Changing material or style
  • Openings lacking proper flashing

Factors that affect the decision

The condition of existing trim, other exterior work planned, the style of the home, preferred material and maintenance expectations.

When further investigation is needed

Removing old trim sometimes reveals rot or missing flashing behind it. We document what we find and discuss the options before continuing.

FAQ

Exterior trim installation FAQs

Is PVC trim better than wood?

It handles moisture better and needs less painting, but it expands and contracts with temperature and needs proper fastening and joints. Wood is easier to profile and suits many older homes.

Can trim be added to a house that never had it?

Often, yes. Band boards, wider casing or corner boards can be added, though siding may need adjusting where they go.

Do you install head flashing over windows and doors?

Yes. Flashing over openings is an important part of how trim keeps water out of the wall.

Should trim go in before or after siding?

Usually before or with the siding, so trim, flashing and siding layer correctly.

Can you cover my old trim with aluminum?

It is an option if the wood underneath is sound. Wrapping rotted trim tends to hide problems, so we check first.

Do you paint new trim?

We can, or leave it primed and ready. It depends on the material and what we agree in the estimate.

How do I choose trim widths?

It depends on the style of the house and the siding. We can show examples and suggest proportions that suit the home.

What does the estimate include?

Materials, profiles, flashing, removal of old trim and finishing. It is free.
