Service Overview

A small part that does a lot of work

An uncapped flue is an open hole in the top of the house. Rain falls straight down it, leaves and debris collect, and birds or small animals can get in. A chimney cap covers the opening while still letting the flue vent.

Caps also wear out. Thin metal rusts, screens clog or tear, and caps get bent or blown loose in storms. A damaged cap may be doing very little, and a loose one can come off entirely.

We look at the top of the chimney, measure the flue or flues, check how the existing cap is attached and the condition of the crown beneath it, then talk through cap options with you.

The cap has to suit the chimney system

Not every cap belongs on every chimney. The right choice depends on the number and size of flues, whether they serve a fireplace, a furnace or water heater, or nothing at all, and any requirements of the appliance or local code. If a flue serves a heating appliance, the cap must not interfere with how it vents, and we may recommend confirming requirements with a qualified chimney or HVAC professional.

Common Problems

Why homeowners call about chimney caps

These are the most common reasons we are asked to install or replace a cap.

No cap at all

An open flue that lets rain and debris fall straight into the chimney.

Storm-damaged cap

A cap that has been bent, knocked loose or blown off in high wind.

Rusted metal

Older caps that have corroded and started to fall apart.

Debris and nests

Leaves, twigs or nesting material collecting at the top of the flue.

Torn or clogged screen

A damaged screen that no longer keeps animals out, or one clogged with debris.

Water at the fireplace

Dampness or dripping inside the firebox or at the bottom of the flue after rain.

Repair or Replace

Repair the existing cap or replace it?

Some caps only need to be reattached. Others are worn out or the wrong type for the chimney.

Often repairable

When the existing cap may be kept

  • Cap loose but otherwise sound
  • Fasteners missing or corroded
  • Cap correctly sized for the flue
  • Screen intact or easily fixed
May need replacement

When a new cap makes more sense

  • Rusted through or badly bent
  • Wrong size or type for the flue
  • Missing entirely
  • Crown being repaired or replaced

Factors that affect the decision

The cap’s condition, whether it fits and suits the flue and what it vents, how it is attached, and the condition of the crown it sits on.

When further investigation is needed

A cap cannot make up for a cracked crown or deteriorated masonry. If we see problems at the top of the chimney, we explain them so you can decide whether to address them at the same time.

Our Process

How chimney cap installation works

  1. Request

Send the form with a photo of the chimney top if you can take one safely.

  2. Assess

We look at the flue or flues, the crown and how any existing cap is attached.

  3. Select

We talk through cap options that suit your chimney and what it vents.

  4. Estimate

You receive a written estimate to review.

  5. Install

The old cap is removed if needed and the new cap is fitted and secured.

  6. Review

We confirm the installation with you, with photos where helpful.

Some caps are made to measure. We confirm timing once the estimate is approved.

Materials & Options

Types of chimney caps

These are general categories. What fits depends on your chimney, so we discuss options rather than pushing one product.

Single-flue caps

Caps that fit over one flue tile, used where flues extend above the crown.

Multi-flue caps

Wider caps that cover several flues, often attached to the crown or chimney top.

Cap materials

Common choices include galvanized steel, stainless steel and copper, with differences in durability and appearance.

Screens

Mesh sides that help keep birds, animals and larger debris out while letting the flue vent.

FAQ

Chimney cap FAQs

Do I really need a chimney cap?

A cap helps keep rain, debris and animals out of the flue. Most chimneys benefit from one, but the right type depends on the chimney and what it vents.

How do you choose the right cap?

We measure the flue or flues, note what each one serves, check how the crown is built and talk through materials and styles that suit the chimney.

Can a cap go on a chimney that vents a furnace or water heater?

Often, but the cap must not interfere with venting. Appliance and code requirements apply, so we may recommend confirming with a qualified chimney or HVAC professional.

What is the difference between a single-flue and multi-flue cap?

A single-flue cap covers one flue tile. A multi-flue cap covers the whole top or several flues at once, which suits some chimneys better.

Will a cap stop my chimney from leaking?

It keeps rain from falling straight down the flue. Leaks through cracked crowns, masonry or flashing need their own repairs.

My cap blew off in a storm. Can you replace it?

Yes. We will look at how it was attached and the condition of the crown, then fit a replacement that is properly secured.

What about animals already in the chimney?

If you suspect an animal is inside, have it removed by a wildlife professional before a cap is installed.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. Chimney cap estimates are free.
