Stairs get more use, and more scrutiny, than any other part of a deck
Every trip on and off a deck goes over the stairs. They carry concentrated loads, they are exposed on every side, and their bottom ends sit close to wet ground. It is no surprise that stairs are often the first part of a deck to wear out.
Safe stairs come down to a few fundamentals. Each step should have the same height (the rise) and the same depth (the run), so your feet can find a rhythm. The stringers that carry the treads need to be sound and properly attached at the top. The bottom of the stairs needs a stable landing that does not settle. And many stairs need a graspable handrail.
We repair worn treads and stringers, rebuild stairs that are uneven or unsafe, and add or replace handrails. When the stair layout itself is the problem, we can redesign the run within the space available.
Requirements vary by town
Maximum rise, minimum run, stair width, handrail requirements and landing details are set by the code your town enforces. Rebuilding stairs may require a permit. We explain what we expect to apply when we provide the estimate.
Stair problems we fix
Uneven or weak stairs are a common cause of trips and falls. These are the issues we look for.
Uneven steps
Risers of different heights, often at the top or bottom step, that break your stride.
Decayed stringers
Rot at the bottom of stringers where they meet the ground or a wet landing.
Split or cupped treads
Treads that crack, cup or flex underfoot.
Sinking landings
Pavers, stones or pads at the bottom that have settled and changed the last step.
Loose top connection
Stringers poorly fastened to the deck framing above.
Missing or unusable handrails
No handrail, or one too wide or flat to grip securely.
Fix the stairs or build new ones?
Some stairs just need new treads. Others need to be laid out again from the top down.
Repair may work when
- Only treads are worn or damaged
- Stringers are sound and well attached
- Rise and run are already consistent
- The landing is stable
Rebuilding may be needed when
- Stringers are decayed or cracked
- Step heights vary noticeably
- The landing has settled or is missing
- The stairs no longer suit the deck layout
Factors that affect the decision
Stringer condition, the total height from deck to landing, the space available for the run, handrail and guard needs, and what your town requires.
When further investigation is needed
If the bottom landing has settled, simply rebuilding the stairs may not solve the uneven last step. We look at the landing and the ground beneath it as part of the job.

Measure
We measure total rise, check each step and look at the stringers and landing.

Stair work is often done alongside railing or deck repairs, which can be combined in one estimate.
Stair components
A safe stair depends on every part, not just the treads you see.
Stringers
The sloped framing that carries the treads, sized and spaced for the width of the stairs.
Treads & risers
Wood or composite treads and optional risers, fastened securely with even spacing.
Landing
A stable pad, paver area or platform at the bottom that will not settle.
Handrails & guards
Graspable handrails and guards on open sides, built to local requirements.

Deck stair FAQs
Why does consistent rise and run matter?
People get used to a step height after the first step or two. A step that is noticeably higher or lower than the rest is a common cause of trips.
What are stringers?
Stringers are the angled boards that support the treads. They need to be sound, properly spaced and securely attached at the top.
Do my deck stairs need a handrail?
Many do, depending on the number of risers and your town’s requirements. A handrail should also be shaped so you can grip it.
My bottom step is taller than the others. Why?
Often the landing has settled, or the stairs were built without accounting for the ground height. Fixing the landing may be part of the solution.
Can you make my stairs less steep?
Possibly. A gentler stair needs more horizontal space. We look at whether the run can be lengthened or a landing added.
Should the stairs sit on the ground?
The stringers should bear on a stable, well-drained landing rather than bare soil, which keeps them drier and helps prevent settling.
Do I need a permit to rebuild deck stairs?
It depends on the town and scope. Replacing treads usually does not; rebuilding stairs and handrails may. We tell you what we expect.
Is the stair estimate free?
Yes. We measure, inspect and provide the estimate at no cost.
