Service Overview

The door everyone sees

Your front entry door sets the tone for the whole house. It is also the door that gets used most, faces the weather head-on, and carries the most expectation for security. Choosing one involves style and practical decisions at the same time.

Entry door systems can include the door itself, sidelites on one or both sides, a transom above, decorative glass, and the frame, threshold and hardware that tie it together. Each choice affects appearance, light, privacy and how the unit fits the existing opening.

We start by looking at the opening, the porch or stoop, the existing trim and how the door faces the weather. We also check the existing frame and sill for rot, since a new door set into a damaged opening will not seal well for long. Then we talk through materials, glass and hardware options. Specific brands and products are options we can discuss together, based on what fits your opening and budget.

Exposure matters

A front door under a deep porch roof lives a very different life from one facing full afternoon sun and wind-driven rain. Exposure influences which materials and finishes make sense, and how carefully the head and threshold need to be flashed.

Common Problems

Why homeowners replace front doors

These are the reasons we hear most often.

Dated or worn appearance

Faded, peeling or dented doors that no longer suit the house.

Security concerns

Loose frames, weak strikes or old locks that do not feel secure.

Drafts at the entry

Cold air around the slab, sidelites or threshold in winter.

Sun-damaged finish

Doors facing strong sun whose finish fades, checks or blisters.

Leaks at sidelites

Water getting in around sidelite glass or at the bottom corners.

Rotted brickmold

Exterior trim around the door that has softened from moisture.

Refresh or Replace

Refresh the door you have or choose a new one?

A tired-looking door is not always a failed door.

Often refreshable

When the existing door may be kept

  • Slab flat and solid
  • Frame square and dry
  • Mainly cosmetic wear or outdated hardware
  • Weatherstripping is the only source of drafts
May need replacement

When a new entry door makes sense

  • Warped, split or delaminating slab
  • Rotted frame or sidelite sills
  • Security concerns with the frame itself
  • You want a different size or configuration

Factors that affect the decision

The condition of the frame and sill, how exposed the entry is, the style of the house, the hardware you want and your budget.

When further investigation is needed

Changing configuration, such as adding sidelites, can require widening the opening and a new header. Depending on the project and town, a permit or inspection may be required.

Our Process

How an entry door project works

  1. Request

Send photos of your entry from the street and up close.

  2. Visit

We measure the opening and look at the frame, threshold and stoop.

  3. Choose

We go over materials, glass, hardware and finish options with you.

  4. Estimate

You receive a written estimate for the door you select.

  5. Install

The old unit comes out, the opening is checked and the new door is set, flashed and sealed.

  6. Finish

Trim is completed, hardware adjusted and the door checked for smooth operation.

Entry doors with glass or custom options can have longer lead times. We confirm timing when you approve the estimate.

FAQ

Entry door FAQs

Which entry door material is best?

There is no single best. Fiberglass resists denting and warping, steel is strong and economical, and wood offers a traditional look with more upkeep. We help you weigh them for your entry.

Can you add sidelites to my existing entry?

Possibly. It usually means widening the opening and adding a header, which may require a permit depending on your town. We evaluate the wall first.

Do you install the locks and hardware?

Yes. Handlesets and deadbolts are installed and adjusted as part of the door project. Let us know if you have hardware you want to use.

Can my new door be painted or stained?

Many doors come factory-finished or primed for paint, and some fiberglass doors can be stained. Options depend on the door you choose.

How do you keep water out at the threshold?

We check the sill and subfloor, use a sill pan or sill flashing, and seal the threshold so water drains outward.

Will a new door fit my existing opening?

Many do, but older homes sometimes have non-standard sizes. We measure carefully and discuss whether a stock or ordered size fits.

Does a glass door reduce privacy?

Textured, frosted and decorative glass let light in while obscuring the view. We can show you options.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. The visit and estimate for your entry door are free.
