Replacing fascia, not just patching it
Fascia is the board along the lower edge of the roof that caps the rafter tails. It carries the gutters, supports the drip edge and closes off the eaves. Because it sits right where water leaves the roof, fascia is one of the first exterior parts to deteriorate.
This page is about replacement: removing long sections or entire sides of fascia and installing new boards. That makes sense when rot runs along much of the board, when previous patches keep failing, or when a new roof, gutters or siding make it the right time to start fresh. For localized damage, see soffit & fascia repair. If the problem is mainly where a gutter attaches, see fascia & gutter repair.
Replacing fascia usually means taking down gutters, removing the old boards, checking the rafter tails and sub-fascia behind them, and then installing new material that is straight, sealed and ready to carry gutters again.
Coordinating with the roof and gutters
Drip edge, the first course of shingles and gutter hangers all meet at the fascia. We plan the work so these parts go back together correctly, which is why fascia replacement often pairs well with roofing or gutter projects.
Signs fascia needs replacing
One soft spot is a repair. These are the signs that point toward a larger replacement.
Rot along long sections
Soft or crumbling wood across much of a side, not just one spot.
Gutters pulling away
Hangers that will not hold because the board behind them has failed.
Wavy roof edge
A fascia line that dips or bows, often from deteriorated tails or sub-fascia.
Repeated patches
Several past repairs on the same run that keep failing.
Pest entry
Gaps at the fascia giving birds, squirrels or insects access to the eaves.
Staining under the eaves
Water marks that show water is getting behind the gutter or drip edge.
Section repair or full fascia replacement?
We recommend the smallest scope that will actually solve the problem.
When a section repair may be enough
- Rot in one short area
- Rest of the run solid when probed
- Gutters otherwise holding well
- Cause of the damage clearly corrected
When replacing the run makes sense
- Rot in several spots along the same side
- Gutters being replaced anyway
- A new roof planned or underway
- Changing to wrapped or low-maintenance material
Factors that affect the decision
How much of the run is affected, the condition of rafter tails and sub-fascia, upcoming roof or gutter work, and the material you want going forward.
When further investigation is needed
Rafter tails and roof sheathing at the edge cannot be fully seen until the fascia is off. If we find damage there, we show you and explain the options before going further.
How fascia replacement works
Request

If gutters are near the end of their life, we can discuss replacing them at the same time.
Fascia materials
Common options we can discuss, depending on the look of the home and how much upkeep you want.
Wood fascia
Traditional and paintable. Needs regular painting and good drainage to last.
PVC fascia
Resists moisture and rot; usually painted only for color.
Aluminum wrap
Formed coil covering over a fascia board, common with vinyl siding.
Drip edge
Metal at the roof edge that sends water into the gutter instead of behind it.

Fascia replacement FAQs
What does fascia actually do?
It caps the ends of the rafters, gives gutters something solid to attach to, and closes off the roof edge from weather and pests.
Do the gutters have to come down?
Usually, yes. Gutters are attached to the fascia, so they are removed and rehung once the new boards are in place.
What is sub-fascia?
Some homes have a rough board behind the finished fascia. If it is damaged, it may need to be replaced too. We check during the work.
Should I replace fascia when I get a new roof?
It is a good time to evaluate it, because the drip edge and first shingle course meet the fascia. Replacing failing fascia then avoids disturbing the new roof later.
Is aluminum-wrapped fascia a good idea?
Wrap reduces painting, but it must be installed so water cannot get trapped behind it. The board underneath should be sound before it is covered.
How is this different from fascia repair?
Repair targets a damaged section. Replacement covers full runs or whole sides. Our soffit & fascia repair page covers smaller fixes.
Can fascia rot be caused by gutters?
Yes. Clogged or poorly pitched gutters and missing drip edge are among the most common causes.
Is the fascia estimate free?
Yes. We inspect the roof edge and provide a free estimate.
