Service Overview

Getting roof water where it should go

A roof sheds a large amount of water during a storm, and the gutter system concentrates it into a handful of downspouts. If those downspouts are too few, badly placed or end right at the foundation, the gutters are doing half the job.

Gutter drainage improvements look at the system as a whole. That can mean upsizing gutters or downspouts on a run that overflows, adding a downspout to a long run, relocating a downspout that empties onto a walkway, adjusting slope, or adding extensions so water lands further from the house.

The goal is practical: water that leaves the roof should be collected, carried and released somewhere it will not cause problems.

Where gutter work ends and other drainage begins

Some water problems start below the downspout. Low spots in the yard, soil sloping toward the house, failed underground drain lines, groundwater and basement waterproofing are separate issues. Gutter improvements can reduce the water reaching those areas, but they do not fix grading or foundation problems. When we think a landscaper, drainage contractor or waterproofing specialist is the right call, we say so.

Common Problems

Drainage problems linked to gutters

If water is ending up in the wrong place, the gutter system is a good first place to look, though not the only one.

Overflow at valleys

Water from two roof planes meeting at one spot overwhelming the gutter below.

Pooling by the foundation

Downspouts emptying right at the house, keeping the soil there saturated.

Erosion under the drip line

Bare soil, washed-out mulch or channels where water falls or discharges.

Icy paths and steps

Downspouts releasing water across walkways where it can freeze.

Undersized system

Gutters or downspouts too small for the roof area they serve.

Splash damage

Staining and wear on siding, trim and masonry near the ground.

Scope of the Fix

Gutter improvements or a different kind of drainage work?

Knowing the difference saves you money and frustration.

Gutter-related

Problems gutter improvements often help with

  • Overflow in heavy rain from clean gutters
  • Downspouts emptying at the foundation
  • Water released across walkways or driveways
  • Long runs with too few outlets
May need a specialist

Problems that may need other specialists

  • Yard sloping toward the house
  • Clogged or collapsed underground drain lines
  • Water entering the basement through walls or floor
  • Standing water far from any downspout

Factors that affect the decision

How much water the roof sheds, how the gutters are sized and laid out, the slope of the ground around the house, and whether below-grade drainage is involved.

When further investigation is needed

Often the right answer is a combination: improve the gutters so less water arrives at problem areas, and have grading or below-grade issues addressed by the appropriate specialist.

Our Process

How drainage improvements are planned

  1. Request

Send the form with photos of the problem areas, ideally during or after rain.

  2. Walk the site

We look at the roof edges, gutters, downspouts and ground around the house.

  3. Identify causes

We separate gutter-related issues from grading or below-grade ones.

  4. Recommend

We explain the gutter improvements we suggest and anything outside our scope.

  5. Estimate

You receive an estimate for the gutter-side work.

  6. Improve

We upsize, add, relocate or extend as agreed, and check the result.

Photos or short videos taken during rain are especially useful. Please take them from the ground or a window.

Materials & Options

Tools for better drainage

Most gutter drainage improvements use a few straightforward approaches.

Larger gutters

More capacity on roofs or runs that regularly overflow when clean.

Larger or extra downspouts

More outlets, or bigger ones, so gutters empty faster in heavy rain.

Relocated outlets

Moving downspouts away from entries, walkways or problem spots.

Extensions

Carrying water further from the foundation before it is released.

We have not yet received Google reviews about gutter drainage improvements specifically. One of these genuine reviews mentions a drainage issue spotted during a visit; the others are about clogged gutters and gutter work.

“They cleared the gutter fast—no mess left behind. Proactively inspected my roof and spotted cracks and a drainage issue on the back section that I never noticed.”

FAQ

Gutter drainage FAQs

Will better gutters keep my basement dry?

They can reduce the water reaching your foundation, which may help. Basement water can also come from groundwater, grading or foundation issues, so we cannot promise gutters alone will solve it.

How far should downspouts discharge from the house?

Far enough that water flows away rather than back toward the foundation. The right distance depends on the slope of the ground. We look at each discharge point.

Do you install underground drain lines or dry wells?

That is below-grade drainage work. We focus on the gutter system above ground and will tell you if we think a drainage contractor should evaluate your site.

Why does water overflow at the same corner every storm?

Corners and valleys often receive water from two roof planes at once. A larger gutter, an extra downspout nearby or a different outlet location can help.

Can you fix a yard that slopes toward my house?

Regrading is landscaping or site work, not gutter work. We can make sure downspouts release water where it does the least harm while that is addressed.

Are extensions enough?

Sometimes. If the main issue is water released too close to the house, an extension may be all that is needed. If gutters overflow before water reaches the downspout, the fix is higher up.

Can you check drainage when it is not raining?

Yes. Staining, erosion and debris patterns usually show where water goes. Photos from a rainy day help fill in the picture.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. Drainage assessments for the gutter system and estimates are free.
