After the storm: what siding damage means
New Jersey sees nor’easters, summer thunderstorms and the remnants of tropical systems. Strong gusts can unlock siding panels and peel them off a wall, hail can crack or dent cladding, and branches can punch holes or tear away trim.
The visible damage is only part of it. Once siding is gone or cracked, the barrier behind it is exposed to wind-driven rain. Flashing at windows and roof lines can be bent or displaced. And damage on one side of the house is often matched by smaller damage elsewhere that is easy to miss from the ground. Loose pieces left flapping can also damage neighboring panels in the next wind.
We start by looking at every elevation, not just the obvious spot. Then we explain what needs to be secured soon, what can be repaired, and what matching options exist for the affected walls.
If the roof was hit too
Siding work is scheduled during normal business hours. If the same storm damaged your roof, Monarch offers 24/7 emergency roofing service: call (551) 241-0470. We can look at the siding as part of the follow-up visit.
Types of storm damage to siding
Different storms leave different marks. These are the ones we see most often.
Wind-stripped siding
Panels unlocked and torn away, often starting at corners, gables and exposed walls.
Hail impacts
Cracks, holes, chips or dents, often on the side of the house facing the storm.
Branch and debris strikes
Holes, broken trim and torn soffit from falling limbs and flying debris.
Displaced flashing
Bent or lifted metal at windows, doors and roof-to-wall joints.
Wind-driven rain intrusion
Water pushed behind damaged siding into the wall or around openings.
Torn gutters and fascia
Gutters and fascia damaged by wind, branches or ice, affecting the roof edge.
Repairing storm damage or residing the wall
Storm damage is often limited to one area, but matching and hidden damage can change the picture.
When a targeted repair usually works
- Damage limited to one wall or area
- Matching siding available
- Barrier and sheathing still dry
- Trim and flashing easily restored
When a wider replacement may be needed
- Damage on several elevations
- No acceptable match for visible walls
- Water reached the sheathing in many areas
- Old siding already brittle before the storm
Factors that affect the decision
How widespread the damage is, whether matching material is available, how long the wall was exposed, the condition of the siding before the storm, and your plans for the house.
When further investigation is needed
If water got behind the siding, the sheathing and framing may need a closer look. We explain what we see and what removing sections to check would involve.

Trim & corners
Corner posts, J-channel and window surrounds that were bent, cracked or torn off.
Barrier & flashing
Patching torn house wrap and restoring flashing so the wall sheds water again.
Roof-edge components
Soffit, fascia and gutter attachment points often damaged by the same storm.

Siding storm damage FAQs
What should I do right after siding blows off?
Stay safe and stay off ladders in high wind. Take photos from the ground, move loose pieces out of the way if it is safe, and contact us to arrange an inspection.
Is it urgent if a few pieces are missing?
The exposed area can let wind-driven rain reach the wall. It is not usually an emergency, but it is worth getting looked at soon.
Can hail damage siding?
Yes. Hail can crack, chip or dent siding, especially in cold weather or on older material. The damage is usually on the side facing the storm.
Will you work with my insurance company?
We can document what we find with photos and an estimate. We cannot promise anything about a claim; coverage decisions are between you and your insurer.
Do you offer 24/7 service for siding?
Our 24/7 emergency service is for roofing. Siding repairs are scheduled during normal hours. If your roof was damaged too, call (551) 241-0470.
Can you match siding after storm damage?
We look for the closest match. If none is acceptable on a visible wall, we explain other options before you decide.
Should I check other parts of the house?
Yes. Storms often damage gutters, soffit, fascia and roofing at the same time. We look at the whole exterior during the visit.
A tree branch hit my house. What now?
If the branch is large or touching wires, keep clear and contact the utility or a tree professional. Once it is safe, we can inspect and repair the siding and trim.
