Service Overview

Keeping wood siding sound

Wood siding gives many older New Jersey homes their character. Clapboards, cedar shingles and other wood profiles can last a long time when they stay dry and well finished, but wood reacts to moisture in a way other siding materials do not.

Most wood siding problems start with water: a failed paint film, a missing piece of flashing over a window, a gutter that overflows onto the wall, or boards that sit too close to the ground. Once water soaks in repeatedly, wood can swell, split, cup and eventually rot.

Repairing wood siding means cutting out damaged boards or shingles, checking what is behind them, and installing new wood that matches the profile and exposure. New wood is primed, including cut ends where practical, so it can be painted or stained to blend with the wall. Where shingles are involved, new ones are woven into the existing courses so the pattern continues.

Fixing the cause, not just the board

Replacing rotted siding without fixing the source of the water usually means the problem comes back. We look for the cause, whether that is flashing, gutters, clearance or the finish, and include it in our recommendation.

Common Problems

Common wood siding problems

Wood shows its problems, if you know what to look for.

Rot

Soft, crumbling wood, often at the bottom of walls, below windows and where roofs meet walls.

Splitting and checking

Boards and shingles that crack as they dry out, weather or move with the seasons.

Cupping and warping

Boards that curl or bow from moisture getting into one side.

Peeling paint

Paint that blisters or peels, often a sign of moisture moving through the wood.

Mildew and staining

Dark growth or streaks on shaded, damp walls or below leaking gutters.

Insect and pest damage

Holes or soft areas that may point to insects or nesting, which can need specialist help.

Repair or Replace

Repair the wood or replace the siding?

Wood siding is very repairable. Replacement only makes sense when damage is widespread.

Usually repairable

When targeted wood repair works

  • Rot limited to specific boards or areas
  • A source of water that can be fixed
  • Profile that can be matched
  • Sheathing behind the siding sound
Consider replacing

When broader replacement may make sense

  • Rot or splitting on several walls
  • Repeated finish failures across the house
  • Hidden moisture damage in many areas
  • Plans to change to a different material

Factors that affect the decision

How widespread the damage is, the source of the moisture, whether the profile can be matched, the condition of the wall behind, and whether you want to keep wood or consider other materials.

When further investigation is needed

Rot can extend further than it looks from the surface. Probing and removing boards shows the real extent, and we explain the findings before changing the scope.

Our Process

How wood siding repair works

  1. Request

Send the form with photos of the damaged wood, or call or text us.

  2. Probe & assess

We check how far damage extends and look for the source of water.

  3. Estimate

You receive a scope covering the siding and the cause of the damage.

  4. Remove damaged wood

Rotted or split boards come out and the wall behind is checked.

  5. Install & prime

New wood is fitted, fastened, primed and sealed where needed.

  6. Finish

Repaired areas are ready for paint or stain, and we review them with you.

Finishing to match existing paint or stain is discussed during the estimate, since it depends on the condition of the surrounding wall.

FAQ

Wood siding FAQs

Can you replace just the rotted boards?

Yes, in most cases. We cut out the damaged boards, check behind them and install new wood that matches the profile.

Why does my wood siding keep rotting in the same place?

Usually because water keeps reaching it there, from a failed flashing, an overflowing gutter, a roof line or ground contact. Fixing that cause matters as much as the repair.

Can you match old clapboard profiles?

Often closely. Some older profiles or exposures are harder to find, and we explain the options if an exact match is not available.

Do you paint the repaired areas?

We prime new wood and prepare it for finishing. How the final paint or stain is handled is something we discuss during the estimate.

Should I switch from wood to another material?

That depends on how much damage there is, the look you want and how much maintenance you are comfortable with. We can talk through vinyl and fiber cement as well.

Is peeling paint a sign of a bigger problem?

It can be. Paint that keeps peeling in one area often means moisture is moving through the wood from behind. It is worth investigating.

What about insect damage?

We can repair damaged wood, but active insect problems may need a pest control professional first. We will tell you if we see signs.

Can you repair cedar shingles?

Yes. Split, cupped or missing shingles can be replaced individually or in sections and woven into the existing courses.
