Installation starts before the first panel goes up
On a new addition, a renovation or a new home, siding goes onto bare sheathing. That is the best opportunity there is to get the wall right. A properly installed water-resistive barrier, flashing at windows and doors, and correct details at the roof line make as much difference to performance as the siding itself.
We work with homeowners and their builders on projects like additions, dormers, garage conversions, gut renovations and full exterior updates. Where new siding has to meet existing siding, we plan how the two will tie together and how close a match is realistic.
Before work starts, we confirm the wall is ready: sheathing installed and sound, windows and doors set, and the roof edge and trim plan agreed. Then we install the barrier, flash the openings, set starter strips and accessories, and install the siding and trim.
Coordinating with other trades
On larger projects, siding is one step among many. We are happy to coordinate timing with your general contractor or builder. Permit and inspection requirements depend on the project and the town, and we will tell you what we know applies.
Installation mistakes we work to avoid
Many siding problems that show up years later were built in on day one. These are the details we pay attention to.
Unflashed openings
Windows and doors without integrated flashing are one of the most common sources of wall leaks.
Missing kick-out flashing
Where a roof edge meets a wall, water can be dumped straight into the siding without it.
Nailing too tight
Some siding needs room to expand and contract. Pinned panels can buckle in summer heat.
Barrier laps the wrong way
House wrap must shed water outward and downward, lapped like shingles.
Poor clearance at grade and roofs
Siding run into soil, decks or roofing stays wet and deteriorates.
Awkward tie-ins
New-to-old transitions that are visible, uneven or let water behind the joint.
New siding for the whole house or just the new part?
On additions and renovations, the big question is how new siding relates to what is already there.
When matching the existing siding can work
- Existing siding in good condition
- A close profile and color available
- Addition on a less visible side
- Clean break points such as corners
When residing more of the house may make sense
- Existing siding aging or discontinued
- Addition on the front or a highly visible wall
- Existing walls showing their own problems
- A planned change in style or color
Factors that affect the decision
The condition and age of the existing siding, how visible the transition is, available materials, your budget, and the overall look you want for the house.
When further investigation is needed
On renovations, removing old siding at the tie-in sometimes reveals damage to the existing wall. If that happens, we show you and agree on the next step before continuing.

Behind the siding: components that matter
These layers do most of the work of keeping water out of the wall. Siding material options are covered on our vinyl, fiber cement and wood pages.
Water-resistive barrier
House wrap or a similar layer that sheds water reaching it and lets the wall dry.
Opening flashing
Flashing tape and metal integrated with the barrier around windows and doors.
Roof-to-wall flashing
Step and kick-out flashing that directs roof runoff away from the wall.
Accessories & trim
Starter strips, corner posts, J-channel and trim that frame and finish the siding.

Siding installation FAQs
Do you install siding on new additions?
Yes. Additions are one of the most common installation projects we see, including tying the new siding into the existing house.
Can you work with my general contractor?
Yes. We can coordinate with your builder on timing and on how the barrier, windows and trim fit together.
Who installs the house wrap?
It depends on how your project is organized. We can install the barrier as part of our scope, or work with what is already in place after checking it.
What is kick-out flashing?
It is a small piece of flashing where a roof edge ends against a wall. It turns roof runoff away from the siding instead of letting it run behind it.
Can new siding match my existing house?
Sometimes closely, sometimes not. Profiles and colors change, and existing siding weathers. We tell you honestly what match is realistic.
Do I need a permit for siding on an addition?
Additions and major renovations usually involve permits and inspections, and requirements vary by town. We will tell you what we know applies.
When should siding go on during construction?
Once sheathing, windows, doors and roof edges are in place and the barrier and flashing can be properly integrated with them.
Can you install soffit and trim too?
Yes. Trim, soffit and fascia are usually part of a complete exterior, and we plan them together with the siding.
