Service Overview

The part of the gutter system that does the draining

A gutter can only empty as fast as its downspouts allow. When a downspout is clogged, crushed, disconnected or simply too far from where the water collects, the gutter fills up and overflows, even if the gutter itself is in perfect shape.

Downspout repair covers the common failures: clearing blockages at the outlet and elbows, re-attaching sections that have pulled apart, replacing crushed or split pieces, and re-strapping downspouts that have come loose from the wall.

Downspout installation is about capacity and placement. Long gutter runs and large roof areas often need more than one downspout. Adding one, or moving one away from an entry or walkway, can make a noticeable difference to how a gutter handles heavy rain.

Where the water ends up

The bottom of the downspout matters as much as the top. Water released right at the foundation can soak the soil there. Extensions and splash blocks help carry it further away. If a downspout feeds an underground drain line, a blockage below ground may need a different specialist, and we will tell you if that seems to be the case.

Common Problems

Common downspout problems

These are the issues we see most often at the bottom end of a gutter system.

Clogged elbows

Leaves and debris lodging at the bends, so water backs up into the gutter.

Crushed sections

Downspouts flattened by lawn equipment, ladders or foot traffic.

Separated joints

Sections pulled apart so water sprays out partway down the wall.

Loose straps

Downspouts swinging free from the wall after fasteners fail.

Water at the foundation

Downspouts that end right at the house with no extension.

Too few downspouts

Long runs relying on a single outlet that cannot keep up in heavy rain.

Repair or Add

Fix the downspout, or add another?

Sometimes the existing downspout just needs attention. Sometimes the layout is the problem.

Repair

When repairing the existing downspout makes sense

  • A clog in an otherwise sound downspout
  • A separated joint or loose strap
  • One crushed or split section
  • Gutter drains well once the downspout is clear
Add or relocate

When adding or moving a downspout may help

  • Gutter overflows even with a clear downspout
  • Very long runs with one outlet
  • Downspout placed where water causes problems below
  • Roof valleys dumping water far from any outlet

Factors that affect the decision

The length of the gutter run, the roof area it drains, where water can be released safely, and the condition of the existing downspouts.

When further investigation is needed

Underground drain lines, dry wells and grading changes are outside the gutter system. If water problems continue at the ground, we explain when a drainage or excavation specialist may be the right call.

Materials & Options

Downspout parts and options

Simple parts, but each one affects how well water gets off the roof and away from the house.

Outlets

The connection between gutter and downspout. A clean, well-sized outlet keeps water flowing.

Elbows & offsets

The bends that route the downspout around the eave and along the wall.

Straps & brackets

Fasteners that keep the downspout tight to the wall and in line.

Extensions & splash blocks

Ways to carry water further from the foundation at ground level.

FAQ

Downspout FAQs

How do I know if a downspout is clogged?

During rain, look for little or no water coming out the bottom while the gutter above overflows. Water spraying from a joint partway down is another sign.

Can you clear a downspout without taking it apart?

Often, yes. Some stubborn clogs at the elbows need a section removed and re-attached. We try the simplest method first.

How many downspouts does my house need?

It depends on the length of each gutter run and the roof area draining into it. Long runs and large roofs often benefit from additional downspouts.

Where should downspouts discharge?

Away from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away from the house, and not onto walkways where water can freeze. Extensions help achieve that.

My downspout goes into the ground. Can you clear that?

We can clear the above-ground portion. A clog in a buried drain line may need a drain or excavation specialist, and we will let you know if that seems to be the issue.

Can a crushed downspout be repaired?

Usually the crushed section is replaced and reconnected. If several sections are damaged, replacing the whole downspout may be simpler.

Why is my downspout pulling away from the wall?

Straps loosen over time, or a heavy clog adds weight. We re-secure it and check for blockages at the same time.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. Downspout inspections and estimates are free.
