Repairing pavers the right way
One of the advantages of pavers is that they can be repaired. Individual units can be lifted, the base underneath corrected, and the same pavers set back in place. Done well, the repaired area blends in with the rest of the surface.
The key is understanding why the problem happened. A low spot near a downspout points to water washing out the base. Pavers spreading at the edge suggest a failed or missing edge restraint. A rut in a driveway may mean the base was never built for vehicles. Resetting pavers without addressing the cause usually means the problem comes back.
During the site visit we look at the damaged area and the surface around it, check slope and drainage, and look for clues such as downspouts, tree roots or utility trenches. Then we explain what we think is going on and what the repair would involve.
When repair is not enough
If most of a patio or driveway has settled, or water is running toward the house across the whole surface, spot repairs may not be good value. In that case we explain why a larger rebuild could make more sense, and you decide.
Paver problems we repair
Each of these has a typical cause. Fixing the cause is what makes a repair last.
Sunken areas
Low spots where the base has compacted, washed out or was too thin.
Heaving and lifting
Pavers pushed up by frost, roots or water trapped below the surface.
Spreading edges
Outer rows drifting apart because edge restraints failed or were never installed.
Broken pavers
Cracked or spalled units from impact, heavy loads or movement underneath.
Puddling
Water collecting in dips instead of draining off the surface.
Open joints
Joint sand lost to rain or power washing, leaving pavers loose and weeds growing.
Spot repair, section rebuild or full replacement?
The scope depends on how far the problem extends and whether the base can be trusted.
When a targeted repair usually works
- One or two low or high spots
- A handful of broken pavers
- Loose pavers along a single edge
- Base sound around the damaged area
When a bigger rebuild may be needed
- Settling spread across the surface
- Slope sending water toward the house
- Ruts from vehicles on a thin base
- Repeated repairs in the same area
Factors that affect the decision
The cause of the failure, the size of the affected area, whether the existing pavers are reusable and how the surface is used.
When further investigation is needed
Once pavers are lifted, we may find a thinner base, softer soil or more water damage than the surface suggested. If that happens, we show you and discuss options before going further.

What goes into a paver repair
Most of a repair happens below the surface you see.
Base aggregate
Compacted stone that carries the load. Low spots often mean this layer needs rebuilding.
Bedding layer
A thin, screeded layer the pavers sit on, set to the correct height and slope.
Edge restraints
Edging that stops the field from spreading. Failed sections are replaced or reset.
Joint material
Sand or polymeric joint material that locks pavers together once compacted.

Paver repair FAQs
Can you reuse my existing pavers?
Usually, yes. Pavers that are intact can be cleaned and reset. Broken or badly worn units are replaced.
Will replacement pavers match?
We look for the closest available match, but older pavers fade and some products are discontinued. Sometimes we suggest taking matching pavers from a less visible area and putting new ones there.
Why did my pavers sink near the downspout?
Concentrated water from a downspout can wash out the bedding and base. A lasting repair usually includes redirecting that water, not just resetting the pavers.
Can you fix pavers lifted by tree roots?
Often. We can reset the pavers after dealing with the surface roots, but removing roots can affect the tree. We discuss the tradeoffs before cutting anything.
Is polymeric sand better than regular sand?
Polymeric sand hardens and resists washout and weeds better than plain sand, but it has to be installed correctly. Whether it suits your surface depends on the paver type and joint width.
My driveway pavers have ruts. Can those be repaired?
Ruts usually mean the base is not strong enough for vehicle loads. A surface reset will not fix that on its own, so we look at the base depth before recommending a repair.
How do I know if the whole patio needs replacing?
If settling is widespread, water runs toward the house, or the base was never built correctly, a rebuild may be better value than repeated spot repairs. We will tell you honestly.
Is the repair estimate free?
Yes. We will look at the problem and give you an estimate at no cost.
