Service Overview

A railing’s first job is safety

Deck railings get noticed for their style, but their real job is to keep people from falling. A guard that wobbles, has wide gaps or is loosely connected to the deck framing can fail when someone leans on it. That makes railings one of the parts of a deck worth checking regularly.

Most railing problems come from the connection between the posts and the deck framing. Posts that were notched too deeply, attached with too few fasteners, or have decayed at the base can loosen over time even when the rails above look fine.

We repair loose or damaged railings, rebuild sections, and replace complete railing systems, including stair handrails. When we replace a railing, we also look at the framing it attaches to, because a strong railing needs something solid to fasten into.

Code requirements vary

Guard height, opening sizes between balusters, handrail shape and the loads a railing must resist are set by the building code your town enforces. Requirements and how they are applied can vary by town and project. New railings and replacements may require a permit; we explain what to expect for your project.

Common Problems

Railing problems we fix

If you notice any of these, keep people from leaning on the railing until it is checked.

Loose posts

Posts that move at the base, usually from weak connections or decay.

Rotted wood

Decay at post bottoms, rail joints and baluster ends where water collects.

Missing or loose balusters

Gaps that open up as balusters loosen, break or fall out.

Damaged top rails

Split, warped or decayed caps and rails that are uncomfortable or unsafe.

Low or uneven guards

Railings that sit lower than expected or sag between posts.

Missing stair handrails

Stairs with no handrail, or a handrail too wide to grip properly.

Repair or Replace

Repair the railing or replace it?

Some railings just need tightening and a few new parts. Others are not worth rebuilding piece by piece.

Often repairable

Repair may work when

  • One or two posts are loose but sound
  • A few balusters or rails are damaged
  • Framing at the posts is in good condition
  • The railing layout otherwise suits the deck
Consider replacement

Replacement may make sense when

  • Several posts are decayed or loose
  • Baluster gaps or guard height are a concern
  • The railing style no longer suits the home
  • The deck is being resurfaced anyway

Factors that affect the decision

The condition of the posts and framing, the railing’s current layout and dimensions, local requirements, and the style you want.

When further investigation is needed

A loose post can be a sign of decay in the rim joist or framing below. If we find that, we explain what needs to be repaired before the railing can be properly secured.

FAQ

Deck railing FAQs

How high does a deck railing need to be?

It depends on the code your town enforces and the height of the deck. We check the requirements that apply to your project rather than quoting a single number.

My railing wobbles. Is that dangerous?

It can be. Keep people from leaning on it and have it checked. Wobble usually comes from a loose post connection or decay at the base.

Can you just tighten a loose post?

Sometimes adding proper hardware solves it. If the post or framing is decayed, tightening will not last, and the post or framing needs repair.

Do I need a permit to replace a railing?

It depends on the town and scope. Some treat a railing replacement as a repair; others require a permit. We tell you what we expect.

Can I change from wood to metal or composite railings?

Usually, yes. The new system needs posts and connections suitable for it, which we plan as part of the job.

Do deck stairs need handrails?

Many do, depending on the number of risers and local rules. Handrails also need to be shaped so they can be gripped.

Can you match my existing railing?

Often we can get close with wood. Exact matches to older or discontinued systems are not always possible; we discuss alternatives.

Is the railing estimate free?

Yes. We inspect the railing and provide the estimate at no cost.
