A fresh exterior, built on a sound wall
Siding replacement is more than putting new panels on the house. It is a chance to see the walls underneath, fix problems that have been hidden for years, and rebuild the weather protection around windows, doors and roof lines.
Homeowners usually consider replacement when siding is cracked or brittle across several walls, keeps coming loose, has faded unevenly, or when repairs can no longer be matched. Replacement is also common when a home is being updated or prepared for sale.
A typical project includes removing the old siding, inspecting the sheathing, repairing damaged areas, installing or restoring the water-resistive barrier, flashing the openings, and then installing the new siding, trim and accessories. Old material is removed from the property. We protect landscaping and walkways as much as practical during tear-off, and keep you informed as the work moves along.
Full or partial replacement
Not every house needs new siding on every wall. Sometimes one or two elevations take the brunt of the weather. We look at each side of the house and explain whether a partial replacement makes sense, and how it would look next to the existing siding.
Signs it may be time to replace siding
One of these on its own is often repairable. Several together, across the house, usually point toward replacement.
Widespread cracking
Brittle siding that cracks easily on several walls, not just in one spot.
Pieces that keep coming off
Siding that loosens or blows off again and again, even after repairs.
Warping and waviness
Walls that look wavy or buckled from poor fastening or heat exposure.
Moisture inside the walls
Peeling interior paint, stains or musty smells near exterior walls.
Severe fading
Uneven color that makes repairs stand out and the house look tired.
Rot and soft sheathing
Decay behind the siding, often found near windows, rooflines and grade.
Is full replacement the right call?
Replacement is a bigger project, so we want to be sure it is needed. Here is what tips the decision either way.
When targeted repair may still work
- Problems limited to one or two areas
- Siding still flexible and well-fastened
- A good match available for repairs
- Walls behind the siding are dry
When replacement is usually the better path
- Damage or wear on most elevations
- Recurring loose or blown-off pieces
- Water damage behind multiple sections
- Repairs that can no longer blend in
Factors that affect the decision
The extent of damage, the condition of the walls underneath, how visible mismatched repairs would be, your budget, and whether other exterior work such as windows or trim is planned.
When further investigation is needed
The condition of sheathing and framing is only fully known once old siding comes off. If we find damaged areas, we show you and explain the options before repairing them.

Siding replacement FAQs
Do you remove the old siding or install over it?
In most cases we recommend removing it. Tear-off lets us see the sheathing, fix damage and install a proper barrier and flashing. We explain the tradeoffs if you are considering other options.
Can I replace siding on just one side of the house?
Yes, partial replacement is possible. The main question is how the new siding will look next to the old, which we discuss honestly before you decide.
What is a water-resistive barrier?
It is the layer behind the siding, such as house wrap, that sheds water that gets past the cladding. It is an important part of the wall, not just an extra.
Will you replace the trim at the same time?
Often it makes sense, since trim and siding are tied together at every window, door and corner. We look at its condition and include it where needed.
Do I need a permit for siding replacement?
It depends on the town and the scope. We will tell you what applies to your project.
What happens if the walls underneath are damaged?
We show you, explain the repair, and agree on it with you before continuing. Hidden damage is common on older homes.
Can I stay home during the project?
Usually, yes. Expect noise and activity around the outside of the house, and we will let you know about access to doors and the driveway.
How do I choose a color and profile?
We bring samples and talk through how different options suit the style of the house. Seeing them against your trim and roof helps.
