The work between the roof, the siding and the windows
Most homes are covered by a few big systems: the roof, the siding and the windows. Exterior construction covers the parts that connect them, such as fascia boards at the roof edge, soffit under the eaves, corner boards and casing, sills, band boards, blocking and the framing behind it all. When these parts fail, water finds its way into walls and the larger systems around them suffer too.
Homeowners call us for this kind of work when they see peeling paint that keeps coming back, soft or crumbling wood, gaps along the roofline, trim pulling away from the wall, or damage after a storm. Others are planning a larger project, such as new siding or windows, and want the surrounding wood and trim brought up to the same standard.
Every project starts with a free visit. We look at what is visible, probe suspect areas, and explain what we think is causing the problem, not only what it looks like on the surface.
Repair versus replacement and new installation
Some pages in this section focus on replacing whole runs of material or installing new components. If you only need a targeted fix to existing siding, soffit, fascia or trim, see our siding services, including soffit & fascia repair and exterior trim repair.

Exterior problems we are often called about
Many of these start as small, cosmetic-looking issues and get worse when water is involved.
Soft or rotted wood
Trim, sills and fascia that feel spongy or crumble when pressed.
Gaps along the roofline
Fascia or soffit that has separated, sagged or opened up to pests.
Recurring water stains
Staining or peeling paint around windows, doors and corners.
Split or loose trim
Boards pulling away from the wall, cracked casing or missing pieces.
Sagging supports
Porch posts, beams or overhangs that are out of level or moving.
Storm damage
Torn trim, dislodged soffit and impact damage after high winds or falling limbs.
Spot repair or a bigger exterior project?
The right scope depends on what is causing the damage and how far it has spread.
Conditions that usually favor a smaller repair
- Damage limited to one board or one area
- A clear, correctable source of water
- Surrounding framing solid and dry
- Material still available to match
Conditions that may point to replacement
- Rot or failure along entire runs
- Repeated repairs in the same areas
- Water reaching sheathing or framing
- Planned siding, roofing or window work nearby
Factors that affect the decision
The cause of the damage, how far it extends, the condition of the framing behind it, what other exterior work is planned, and your budget.
When further investigation is needed
What is behind trim, siding or fascia often cannot be confirmed until materials are opened up. If we find more damage once work begins, we stop, show you, and discuss the options before changing the scope.

Wood
Traditional for trim and fascia. Needs priming, painting and good water management to last.
PVC & cellular trim
Moisture-resistant boards often used for trim, fascia and areas near the ground or roof.
Aluminum coil & wraps
Formed metal used to cover fascia and trim, often alongside vinyl siding.
Flashing & sealants
Metal and membrane flashing plus sealants that direct water away from joints.

Exterior construction FAQs
What counts as exterior construction?
It covers the wood, trim and detailing on the outside of the home that is not the roof covering, siding or window units themselves: fascia, soffit, trim, sills, framing repairs and the flashing that ties them together.
Do you handle exterior work and roofing on the same project?
Yes. Fascia, soffit and trim often get addressed alongside roofing, siding or gutter work, which can make sense when the area is already open.
How do I know if my problem is cosmetic or more serious?
Peeling paint can be just paint, or it can be a sign of moisture behind it. Soft wood, staining that returns, and gaps that keep growing usually point to something more. A visit lets us check.
Will you match the existing look of my home?
We aim to. Profiles, sizes and materials vary, especially on older homes. We tell you up front if an exact match is not available and talk through the closest options.
What if you find hidden damage after the work starts?
We stop, show you what we found, and explain the options before adding anything to the scope.
Do exterior projects need permits?
It depends on the town and the type of work. Like-for-like trim replacement often does not, while structural repairs may. We let you know what applies to your project.
Can you work around my existing siding?
Usually. Many trim and fascia jobs can be done without disturbing much siding, though some pieces may need to come off and go back on.
Is the visit really free?
Yes. Exterior inspections and estimates are free, and you decide whether to go ahead.
